Sorry, another packing question...
We are on our way to Portland tomorrow.
10 days, 2 people. I can get it all in one big bag, but it will be heavy! Do you think the airlines prefers two bags medium heavy or one really heavy? I usually pack a lot of clothes and many pairs of shoes, nuthin different this time :) but the Yankee is hoping for just one bag. Thanks if you feel like advising me..(and answering one more packing question :)) |
Scarlett: Oh boy do I know the answer to this one! From my own personal experience, take two medium bags. Be sure to give yourself a little extra room for all of the shopping you will do on vacation. The last thing you want to have happen is to exceed the weight limit and that can happen very easily with a large suitcase that is filled to capacity. Have a great trip!
|
You can tire yourself out carrying a large suitcase and it will be easier with each having his own rather than wasting prescious time sorting things out.Have a wonderful vacation and I wish you great weather.
|
Thank you both, I love you :D
I was thinking the same thing, about shopping :D But that is not something I need to bring up now to certain Yankees imagining no spending sprees in all of those lovely stores... I will tell him that the two bags are to spare him in case he has to carry them LOL Thank you both ((L)) Scarlett the frazzled |
Scarlett, one of my girlfriends used to toss bags for an airlines for her flight privledges only.
She said that they will purposely scuff heavy bags and not to ever just pack one heavy bag. Pack two medium bags. |

I Thank You, Ladies :) We are taking one large but light bag with a medium light bag. I will have tons of room to bring things back. thanks for being so helpful, I have become more simpleminded as the days have gone by...a direct result of the 3 H's. Scarlett |
But Scarlett...you have forgotten the necessary empty 3rd bag:) The one that suddenly appears for getting all the new stuff home:)

Longchamp makes a huge nylon folding bag, great for buying or carry dirty clothes on a trip.
|
but cigale...why ever would you want to buy dirty clothes on a trip?? :-)
Seriously, I recently discovered the perfect suitcase combo (for me at least): I have my regular wheelie bag, and used to carry a BIG shoulder bag-I could put my purse, computer, and all my carry on junk in it. I would put it on top of the wheelie bag and not have to carry it, until I checked in my wheelie at the airport. Then I had to haul it on my shoulder, :-( or depend on the kindness of family to help. My friend recently gave me a new bag to use as my carryon..It looks like an athletic bag... you know, the soft, shoebox shaped one with handles on the top. This one, though, has wheels on one end and a handle on the other. It balances much better on top the wheelie bag and holds way more than my shoulder bag. I can roll it thru the airport, or if I really get carried away shopping (who, me??), it is sturdy enough to check through. At that point, I carry on my purse and my huge, but very light weight nylon shoulder bag. If I am lucky enough to have my husband or children with me, they carry the huge bag and I carry my purse! |
'Lol, I should have worded that differently.
|
I am carrying the Longchamp tote as a carry on :)
I want a wheelie bag!! Do you use it as a carryon or check it? We are all set, I think I have a total of 4 bags LOL if you count carryons and purses ~ By Bye~ Sayonara~ Hasta Lavista!! |
no this is too big for a carry on. I fold it in the 22"til it is put to use from overflow, the smaller one is used to carry the three bottle olive oil in a cardboard case.
have a wonderful time |
Scarlett, I have a 22 inch expandable pullman that I attach a very heavy duty and big duffle bag that I use as carryon.
Put your handbag inside one of your carry ons so you don't have to count it as a carry on. Does that make sense? |
Yes, GT, it makes perfect sense:)
I have packed a medium suitcase and the larger one..both not too full and heavy..both with room to bring stuff home . I will check those, carry on my Longchamp tote and purse. Someday when I grow up, I will get new improved luggage. Thank you all for the great advice.. Bye bye~ Scarlett |
If the one bag is too heavy, they may charge you a fee for it. I can't recall the pound limit, but the last time I flew, they alerted me to that possibility. So that's reason enough to take two bags.

Scarlett, we had a bag once that was really big, a wheelie. We referred to it as the double wide, it was really like a little van. This was pre-9/11 and it was always so crazy when we took it on a trip because we'd have to wheel it to the gate or the ticket counter and it was HUGE. We would load it up on trips, only stopping our buying when we realized the double-wide would be full. Over the years, the wheels started to lose the tread and we'd be dragging the darn bag across the airport (screeching!) using the leather strap attached to one side. The advantage of the larger bag, however, was that we could bring more back with us.
The other advantage is that you could bring a stowaway with you (I'm trying to escape, hint, hint). Be good. Be safe. Go shopping \:D/ |
Thanks Joy :D
Tandoori Girl, since I cannot email you, I will have to thank you publicly for your support and laughs on an earlier thread today..THANKS! I have heard from a dear friend who has just returned from a trip of her own and the advice was similar, SHOP shop shop :D So I will explain this to my Yankee and I am convinced that the best Therapy for Hurricane Stress is going to a city somewhere far away and shopping~ Stay safe and be well, Scarlett |
The weight limit is 50 lbs. per bag.
|
Scarlett, The last few times we have flown, we have been busted on bags weighing more than 50 lbs (and one was not over by that much). Perhaps you can appeal to the Yankee about having to pay surcharges for heavy baggage, while deviously plotting spare room for shopping!
|
2 medium, as large pieces are more likely to be left behind.
Or make it 2 large with room for souvenirs! |
