Soo area choices

We are a couple in our late fifties and are planning a trip to the Soo area in June.

1. We want to spend one day in Sault Ste Marie and another day either driving (a) up the eastern coast of Lake Superior through the Lake Superior Provincial Park or (b) along the southern coast to Tahquamenon Falls. Which would you recommended? We are especially looking for photographic opportunities including beautiful scenery and interesting architecture (lighthouses etc.) and we also enjoy history (such as the Shipwreck Museum.)

2. We will then spend one full day and part of the next day in the Mackinaw City area visiting Mackinac Island etc. and then drive back to Indiana taking the scenic route along the eastern coast of Lake Michigan. We are thinking of spending a night in Traverse City and visiting the Sleeping Bear Dunes area. I am also interested in the Manistee area because of the lighthouse. Any other suggestions?

Thanks so much for your help. Living in northern Indiana all my life I am embarrassed that it has taken this long to take this trip.

My choice would be to head to Tahquamenon Falls. From the Soo head to Brimley and drive along the shore. A great lighthouse is just west of Brimley. You can climb to the top for great views. Whitefish Point is a must. You have the Shipwreck Museum, the lighthouse and its renovated keepers quarters along with great birding. The falls are always nice. Just be prepared for the black flies. June can be a peak time for them.

Family loves Lake Superior Provincial Park but for one day there is just not enough time to see the best of the park.

Heading south from the bridge gives you many opportunities. There are lighthouses all along the coast. Have fun choosing!

That's the Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse. I've got a photo of it here: http://tinyurl.com/rj92h

You could also go to Picture Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore after the Shipwreck Museum, but it looks like it's probably too far away to be worthwhile. There's a maritime museum just east of it.

Thanks to both of you for the great advise. I think that's what we will do.

Gorgeous photo, Weasel! I hope I can get a nice one, too. We are really looking forward to this trip!

I would also vote the southern coast, but the route north has a rugged beauty.

You might check if there is a St Mary's River lighthouse cruise the day you will be at the Soo, it includes a passage through the locks and a god view of both countries from the water.

On your drive back south, be sure to go to Cross Village and take M-119 along the shore to Harbor Springs. This drive may be one of the highlights of your trip.
