True Story - In 1990 the ship Hansa Carrier lost containers with 80,000 pairs of Nike shoes off Korea. A year later, they started washing up off the Pacific Coast.

A couple of years later, there were masses of shoes washing up in the Grenadines in the Caribbean (DIIK the source for these but but I saw them !).

Sadly, they were never in pairs.

I can believe that accident victims can be knocked from their shoes due to the accident’s impact but then why doesn’t the police sweep them up with the rest of the debris?

Youse guys shouldn't be nosin' around in things that don't concern you.

Sometimes during a whack job the shoes fall off. But that don't mean it's any of your business.

You undertand me.

Ran a search on "weird" and bumped into this thread ... and since I've often wondered about this topic thought I'd toss in my 2 cents worth. We've all seen the shoes draped over a wire ~ has anyone actually witnessed anyone pitching 'em up there? Or will anyone admit to having done this?

Yes, I get all of my shoes by picking them up on the side of the road.

I thought this was funny when I first saw it last year. Always have found the single boot thing weird. A traveling companion and I made up stories about them when we were on a long trip. One version: aliens who abduct humans sometimes drop the shoes in their hurry, and since most abductees tend to be yahoos driving aged pick-up trucks, it stands to reason most of the roadside footwear would be workboots. Then we decided that the molecular re-organizers that beam people up just can't manage Odor-Eaters. Another idea was that single lovesick shoes are out looking for the single socks that disappeared out of the washing machines.

You can take it from there.....

No they are not from fatals( in our area anyhow we take care of those things) One of my favorite stories is about the women on the platform of a train leaving the station and sees her glove laying on the ground so she throws the other glove off the train so someone could have a pair.

I live near and walk on the beach nearly every day. There are always a number of miscellaneous shoes lying near the parking areas of the beach. The answer is simple. Many people stand by the car and take off their shoes to pound the sand out of them, or to switch to their sandals, or to leave them off all together so as not to get sand in the car. They invariably stand by their car and do the shoe change, put the one pair on the roof or the hood of the car, then get in the car and drive off, allowing one or more shoes to slide off and be left behind.

Somewhat related to this somewhat-related thread --

Overheard at a Chicago-area ice skating rink, between a woman looking for a lost item and a rink worker with the lost-and-found box:

Woman: "Wow, you sure have a lot of single gloves and mittens in there. What do you do with them, finally, if no one claims them?

Worker: "We take the box over to the orphanage."

Woman: "Have a lot of one-armed orphans, do they?"

Re tied shoes over telephone wires.
When I was young(long time ago) it was "fun" to try and get sneakers(were not called tennis shoes back then)tangled in phone wires. Became an art to see who could twist one shoe on the wire and how far you could "dangle" the other. Never was much good at it but had a friend who was an ACE "dangler"
Thank God I've grown up!!!

Cecil Adams, the purveyor of wisdom who answers all kinds of random questions in his column,"The Straight Dope", tackled both of these burning questions a few years ago. You can find out what he reported in the archives of the Straight Dope web site.

"Why do you always see just one shoe by the side of the road?"

"Why do you see pairs of shoes hanging by the laces from power lines?"

Regarding shoes in a tree or over power lines:
It is traditon at my husband's college that at graduation the seniors tie their shoes together and throw them in a tree or over the power lines. They remain there until they fall or are taken down by the next graduating class.
I have witnessed shoes flying off the top of a car by someone who forgot they put them there. I have also seen shoes fall from car windows of people who have packed the back of their car to full on their way to the beach.

Calling all San Franciscans: somebody told me when there are 2 shoes tied and hanging on electric wires it means this is where you can buy drugs, is this true?

In Los Angeles, there is now a program to take the shoes off of the phone lines. You can call a # and the power company will come and remove them. In Los Angeles, the shoes are believed to deal w/ gangs and drugs.

I live in LA and was told at one point that it was an indicator that drugs were being sold nearby.

However, just recently there was a blurb about this in my local newspaper claiming that this is an urban myth. They have nothing to do with drugs, and nothing to do with a symbol of gang intimidation as another theory once said. The article states that the shoes get up there, usually, as a result of childrens' play. Apparently, some kids find it funny to hold one of their playmates down, take his/her shoes off, and toss them somewhere where they can't be retrieved and where the entire neighborhood can see them and think, "ha ha, someone must have kicked Johnny's rear because those are his new Nikes he was bragging about up there on the phone lines!"

Get it. Unfortunately, I think that people older than kids apparently find this funny as well. Sheesh, kids these days...

I'll bet they're mostly accidents. Just look at the statistics about how many fatal car accidents there are daily. Growing up in Orange County there was hardly a day that went by that I didn't see TWO accidents on the highway (most of you who live in urban areas probably would say the same). Sad, but true. I've seen it with my eyes(people, dogs on the side of the road after an accident). The other theories were fun though, and make interesting reading. Also a lot of's how the human brain copes with things that are shocking and/or unpleasant. Now, I don't know about the big red splotches I also see often on the freeway....Paint? Has anyone else noticed those? Someone told me blood but that can't be correct, because everyone knows that oxidizes and turns brown....... Maybe those are really pranks by young boys that don't have much on their mind.

Posts: 3,491 has several of the proposed "legend" explanations for shoes over power lines and telephone wires -- search there on "shoes" to find it.
