Something Different in Key West?
 

I am planning a trip to Key West in early February. Since I have been there several times before and done most of the touristy things (sunset cruise, Hemingway House, Truman White House and renting a car and driving up the keys) I was wondering if there is something different that I might do or something I might be missing. I'm also in need of a special restaurant for an anniversary dinner. I will be staying at the Hyatt on Front St. Any suggestions?

If you haven't taken the boat ride to Looe Key you're really missing something. You would need a wet suit to get into the water in February but it's a really easy snorkel trip. Also the seaplane to the Dry Tortugas and to Fort Jefferson is really fabulous. There's an old lighthouse that's worth a trip on the island. And the Audubon Home is interesting. You could go searching for some Key deer, they're really cute. There's a great marina campground on Big Pine Key where I've seen a few of them. That stop would be for your trip there or back.

Here's an original idea, why don't you get off that rock and either rent or charter a boat for a day? Not a boat trip with 50 other people but your own boat. You can snorkel, fish, and dive at your own leisure.

If you don't have major ocean boating experience, hire a skipper. Freshwater boating and boating in the keys are night and day.

GoTravel - do you reommend a company to rent from? I've often thought of doing, but wasn't sure about reputation......

Across the bay on Sunset Key, they offer lavish beach front dining and picnics... however it is a hilton run property and I'm not sure of general access... check it out

Dolphin Marina on Little Torch Key (which is the Key just west of Big Pine Key-approx at the 28 mile marker) has a good rental boat reputation. But rentals are not cheap...but cheaper than a charter.
They have a web site www.dolphinmarina.com....you can check out the rental fees and they have several boats to choose from.

Take a boat or plane ride to the Dry Tortugas National Park. It's about 90 miles from Key West and worth it. The boat ride is about 3 hours and $100.00 per person and worth every cent.The plane ride is about 30 minutes and more expensive. It's an all day trip and one of the best places to go while in Key West.

I haven't taken the seaplane to Dry Tortugas (I'm a white-knuckle flyer) but I've heard it's absolutely wonderful. The people I know who've gone on that excursion have absolutely loved it.

Sorry I didn't combine this with my first post, but have you considered Little Palm Island for your anniversary dinner? Granted it's quite a drive up to Little Torch Key, but you might enjoy it. It's VERY expensive.

If you want to stay in Key West, you might consider Louie's Backyard for a special dinner. I think it's the prettiest restaurant in Key West and the food is fabulous.
