Somebody with experience at Newark Airport (EWR)
Looking at flights in preparation for a Rhine River cruise next September. This is Avalon cruise company-arranged flights, both legs on United.
I am concerned that there is not enough time between flights in Newark. Travel agent says not to worry; we won't have luggage to contend with, and flights on the same airline will depart from gates that are in proximity.
Sept 6th- FLL to EWR(Newark) 1:30pm-4:45PM
EWR to AMS- 6:10pm- 7:45 am on the 7th.
Any thoughts?

It's possible that you will have to change from Terminal A to Terminal C. Catch the bus at Gate 28 in Terminal A to get to Terminal C. Do not take the monorail as you'll have to go through security again. With the bus you won't have to do that.
Assuming your flight into Newark is on time, I think you'll be fine.

tom: >>or do you have 25 hours in Newark?in Amsterdam! And why on earth would she have to go through Customs?
rncheryl: Other Newark experts will know for sure -- I've never transferred United to United there. But you will get both boarding passes at FLL and you should not have to leave airside in EWR so as long as your FLL flight doesn't take off an hour late you should be OK
Hopefully others will see your post . . .

There is no way I would take that little time for a connection at EWR - esp that late in the day. Perhaps not so bad in the am but as the day passes more and more flights come into EWR late and if you land even 30 minutes late you have less than an hour to deplane (figure 15 minutes),race to the next gate (30 minutes - are you a fast walker with your carry-on?) to get there not at 6:10 when the plane takes off but more like 5:45 when the flight doors close.
Before accepting this I would
1) check the on-time record of you incoming flight
2) determine the gates usually used by these flights
If you accept this flight plan on
1) getting a seat right in the front of the plane (save 10 minutes at least deplaning)
2) plan on jogging as fast as you can with your carry-on to the next gate (United's terminal C has 4 separate fingers with almost 60 gates)
And have an alternate in mind (and contact info for the tour company) if for some reason you miss the flight.

My experience at EWR would be the pssibility s someone mentioned of having to travel between terminals. On time records are useless IMO since the only on time record that really matters is the flight you are ON.
United at EWR is HUGE so the whole "proximity" thing is ridiculous in terms of possible arrival and deparure gates.
BUT why are you WORRYING now, Chreryl? If a whole bunch of people say it won't work are you going to change your flights? No, you aren't so worry about other things ane let it happen. You will not miss your flight. You will not miss your flight. You will not miss your flight. repeat it 1000 times.

Dukey, "worrying"now because Avalon is asking for a down payment on flight this month, and the price seems very good.
Plenty of things to really be concerned, esp. the cost of lodging in Amsterdam at that time of year, and in Switzerland. Holy moly.

There appear to be earlier flights out of FLL. Why not just choose one of them instead if it's worrying you.
Last May, we were set to take a flight from Indianapolis to Newark at 11:12 on our way to Rome. Then United cancelled that flight and we ended up with an itinerary very similar to yours. We made it in plenty of time to our gate as the flight from Indy was on time (which is why I offered that you had plenty of time assuming your flight was on time). But I had a similar anxiety to yours for the reasons nytravelerer mentioned. If given the option, I'd probably choose a earlier flight from FLL.
I'd also get trip insurance.

This whole discussion is going to be moot: United almost always change their schedules frequently, and OP won't know the actual times until a couple of months before leaving in September. (The EWR-AMS flight probably won't change much, but the FLL-EWR flight is VERY likely to change.)

I agree, Don. My DD had her flights from Austin to San Diego to Honolulu changed FOUR times in the last 6 weeks.
Buy good trip insurance. Then any extra costs due to late flights will not be an issue.

You have plenty of time to change planes without having to rush as long as your flight isn't unduly late, but you need to be sure to take the United Airlines shuttle that stays within security rather than the Airtrain, which requires you to do security again at each terminal, if you have to change between terminals A and C.
If your flight is on time, you can certainly take the Airtrain, which is usually faster, and then you'll have time to go through security again.
