Does it have to be Solvang? Los Olivos Cafe is nearby. Or Trattoria Grappolo in Santa Ynez come to mind.

The Hitching Post is also very good but I don't how romantic it would be!

Hitching Post can be very noisy--but the food (and wine!) is worth it--I didn't mention it because of the noise factor. The fries are the best! (don't even think about avoiding trans fat--but they're worth the splurge!)

Resturant does not have to be in Solvange, it is just that that is where we are staying for the evening and would like it to be in the area. I said romantic to try to avoid large and or chain resturants. Wanted something small and local for a birthday dinner. Thanks for the help.

I'll second the Los Olivos Cafe. Small place with very good food, there is also an entire wall of wine to choose from and a tasting bar there. Very nice little place! ***kim***

Barblab,
We visit Solvang nearly every year after spending part of our honeymoon there 20 years ago. The now closed Cabernet Bistro replaced Paoli's both of which were charming places with good food. There is really nothing of the same quality to replace them in town. Last year we stayed at the Petersen Inn which included breakfast and dinner in a lovely dining room. Unfortunately the restaurant is only open to guests so we try to stay there when we visit.
This year we hope to try The Chef's Touch, www.thechefstouch.com., and perhaps the new Wine Cask at Fess Parker's Wine Country Inn in Los Olivos. Perhaps someone else will have more info on them.
