Solo trip to NYC
Hi. I'm vacationing solo in NYC in July. I need some ideas of what to do and where to stay.
I'm 30ish, relatively outgoing and simply need a break from my children. I would welcome any ideas. Thank you. |
I found it very easy to use the subway system to get around. Lots of walking to see the usual tourist areas, but no problems doing so. People were helpful if asked for directions.
Highly recommend "New York Party Shuttle" for their 5-1/2 hr tour (instead of just using a double-decker or other regular bus tour). Smaller groups & a tour guide who gets on/off with you at sites. |
Have you been to New York before? What kind of things do you like to do: shop, see museums, bike...?
I think you might enjoy staying in a neighborhood like mine, the Upper West Side, where there are several hotels. It's a great place to stroll around at any hour, lots of reasonable places to have dinner and shop. If you want to go to midtown for theater, or further downtown, you can do it in 15-20 minutes by subway. Buses can take you crosstown to museums, and you will be between 2 parks--Riverside park (on the Hudson) and Central Park. There are many concerts and other free events in the parks during the summer. For example http://www.summerstage.org |
How long will your trip be (week or long weekend?)
|
What do you like/want to do?
Shop? Theater? Museums? Bars? |
What to do:

Fun tours and Broadway shows.
That's what I'm doing anyway :-) |
Typo above
shearwatersailing.com There is no one best location. Find a hotel that fits your budget. Look on quikbook.com and kayak.com Check specials on travelzoo.com If you're looking for something small and trendy, 6 Columbus is relatively new and has some very small rooms (good for 1) called pod rooms. Prices often good on quikbook. |
I travel solo often... You can do the same things you'd be interested in doing if you were traveling with someone else. Just by yourself!
What do you like? Shopping, museum, tours, architecture, history, food, wine, theater, music, etc. I am no expert on NYC but I would pick a centrally located district so you can walk to at least some of your items of interest. |
I love to spend time in Central Park when I'm in New York, and since you'll be there in July, you should check out the Summer Stage concert schedule for the dates you'll be there: http://www.summerstage.org/
Can't go wrong with any of the amazing museums either! My favorite is MOMA. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is great, too. Have fun! |
What's your budget? Peninusula or Milford Plaza?
It is ridiculous to ask for recommendations when you don't tell us how much money you want to spend. I could send you to a coffee shop or Chanterelle, sweetie darling. Thin |
