Solo travel to Honolulu
 

Hi everyone,

I booked a holiday, 6 days in Waikiki, and I’m a bit nervous because I’m travelling solo. I have a few things planned: Pearl Harbor, hiking, luau, beach, exploring, etc. I’m sure I’ll be fine but little things are worrying me, like my plane arrives late in the evening, so my instinct is telling me to take a taxi, even though it might be pricey; will the hotel be accomodating enough to help me with logistics of getting back to airport I know it all sounds silly, but I’ve been reading unfortunately experiences. I’m going to think positive. Any ideas, suggestions or sharing positive experiences would be helpful. Thanks everyone

How do you usually get from an airport to a hotel? I almost always use a taxi. And likewise to return to the airport. I'm not sure what you are worried about... Always take a taxi from the official taxi rank, don't go with someone who approaches you at baggage claim.

What kinds of unfortunate experience hav you read about?

I travel alone all the time and have had wonderful experiences.

Kathie's advice is good - go to the official taxi rank. An official taxi should have a name and phone number for the taxi company printed on the outside of the car.

Every hotel will help you get a taxi back to the airport or tell you how to arrange for a bus pickup.

I've been to Honolulu/Waikiki 5 times, 4 of them solo (female). What "unfortunate experiences" have you read? Where are you reading this? I have not had that happen to me.

Yes take a taxi to your hotel, especially since you are getting in late. Couldn't be easier, they are lined up outside the airport. Yes the hotel will help you get a taxi or shuttle back to the airport when it's time to leave.

I have had fantastic trips every time. The area is set up for tourism so it's very easy to get around. The Bus (public transportation) is a world-class system.

Things I have done in addition to the beach, pool, etc. included (not all in one trip but different times): Doris Duke ShangriLa Estate tour, Iolani Palace (highly recommend this one), Foster Botanical Gardens and Quan Yin temple, Chinatown, various Farmer's markets.

I think I’m just nervous about a solo trip. Leaving I’m mid August. Thinking positive it should be great. Any more advice and suggestions would be great!

I am sure your hotel's concierge can help you with options to get back to the airport. Easiest way is taxi. I suppose there might also be some shared shuttle services that might be cheaper. Waikiki should be a pretty easy destination for a solo traveler. You'll be fine.

I don't know what I can say to reassure you, besides Honolulu/Waikiki is about as easy traveling as you are going to find anywhere in the world. It's a town/city set up to welcome visitors.

Thank you everyone. I’m excited to go. Do you guys think 6 nights is enough? Considering adding another day if it’s still possible.

The longer the better!! I've gone for as short as 5 days (when that was all I could get off work) but I think 7-10 days is a lot more fun.

The way I see it your arrival and departure days are pretty much nothing but that... so "6 days" really only gets you 4 full days of sightseeing and activities.

Yeah, six is fine but seven is better.

I was just there for a family wedding and tagged on a couple extra days in Waikiki (when I was on my own). Waikiki is definitely a place that's easy for solo travelers (so much to do and lots of restaurants and shops within walking distance). I generally will take an uber or cab to/from the airport when traveling --- one less thing to worry about and I know that I can get to my hotel more quickly (especially appreciated after a long flight).
