Hi wanderer,

One place that lists sample sales is New York magazine on their sales & bargains page. In the magazine (which you should buy when you get to town to know what's going on)the sales & bargains listed are for the week. On the website, it appears they do daily updates. Their website is newyorkmetro.com/shopping/sb

They also list some other discount places here

If you're a serious bargain hunter, people rave about the Woodbury Commons Outlet Mall, an hour from NYC. There are buses from Port Authority that take you there. Here's info.

Arnold may be governor, but at least no fleas at Bloomies. I thought Century 21 handled houses - does that mean I'm out of the grunge and funk loops too? I was feeling kinda edgy too. Are you saying no more Loehmann's ... you really do take all the entertainment value out of shopping.

Alas, Loehmann's is not what it once was, particularly the one in NYC. The clothes are more bland, middle of the road IMO. I do still see some nice things in the Back Room at the one in Boca Raton, Fla.

I do agree with NYCFS about the dept stores in NYC though. I often buy shoes in Saks & Bergdorfs. Their sales are great & I belive at the beg. of Dec., when wanderer will be in town, the shoe sales wil be on at Saks & maybe Bergdorfs.

For shoes, what about the legendary Dan's in Philly? Now that is a woman's shoe paradise - worn one time by runway models in Europe, and Dan gets them cheap, and so do you. Richard may be running it for Dan these days. WE thrill to the call "I need a righty for #112/3"

KandKmom,
We live in the village area and my kids do that village/soho walk almost daily. It's a very easy walk. From wherever you are staying, take a subway to 14th st (N,R,Q,1,2,3,9,4,5,6). At 14th Street head over to 5th AV. Youll see the Washington Sq Park Arch to the end of 5th Av. At 5th Av and 13th St, sto in the Forbes Gallery. Your kids will love it. It contains M. Forbes' various collections of model ships, toy soldiers, monopoly boards, Fabrege Eggs and many other interesting peices. It's free and also has clean restrooms (if needed). Walk through Wash. Sq park there always seems to be som e form of entertainment. Just keep wandering south after exiting the park, you'll got through the VIllage and SOho. You can even stroll over to Little Italy and Chinatown from Soho.

You are missing out if you don't spend a couple of hours digging through Century 21. I bought my full length sherling coat there last year for $125. It was $2500 at full price.

Hey, nobody mentioned 8th Street (in the Village) for shoes! It's just shoe store after shoe store from 6th Ave to Broadway.

This thread has been fun, and thanks for all the web links and magazine hints!!

I'm looking forward to "hunting" and I'll bite my tongue and peruse the department stores. Sounds like Saks and Bergdorf may be a good bet. (A little higher end than Macys?)

I may be in finance, but I don't want to be DULL. Ann Taylor thinks they have "edge"? They're OK if you like basic black and black and black, buy maybe NYC stores are better than Boston.

I'll report when I get back.

Saks, Barneys, and Bergdorf Goodman are much much much more expensive than Macys. The former are expensive designer boutiques under one roof.

NYCFoodsnob, Did you mean West Broadway (home to Otto Tootsi Plouhound)? The only shoe stores I can think of on Broadway are David Z and Puma. (probably because I try to avoid Broadway as much as possible...it's like a mall and is as crowded as Times Square.)

And 8th Street isn't all cheapie toecrushers. Besides Make 10 and Shoe Plaza, which offer an enormous variety of cheap, trendy, disposable shoes, there's a couple of high-end Italian boutiques with shoes out of my price range.

Wanderer, I guess it all depends on what you are looking to spend...and whether you want classy, long-lasting items vs trendier, cheaper stuff. Have fun shopping in NY!

I suggest you may have two wandering agendas -- one for pleasure, one for results (acquisition of the kind of stuff you hope to find).

For pleasure, I strongly suggest NoLita, which is Elizabeth, Mott, and Mulberry Streets, all running downtown a couple of blocks form Houston Street. The atmosphere here is lovely and European, the boutiques one of a kind only, and beautiful. The prices may be too high but it is really so lovely to wander around here.

Then - to get what you want -- Century 21 in my opinion is your true best bet. You'll find European designer clothes (other things too) at amazing prices. You'll find things you would never have looked at because they're in the shops you don't go into (zillion-dollar designer shops), at prices you might want to pay. (For example - my wonderful Versace party skirt, marked down from $720 to $120.)

If you're hoping to find a thing or two to hop up a professional wardrobe, I really think it's your spot. It IS a department store however. It is across from the WTC site, if that's on your agenda.

It's the best discount store on the planet.

Daffy's, Filene's Basement, Loehmann's -- you find good stuff there sometimes too (they are all pretty near each other in the Lower Fifth Ave/Chelsea area).

Then - back to wandering & pleasure --the East Village: check out 9th St between First and Second Avenues for some shops that have their own nice clothes. Also you might like to wander 7th Street between Avenue A and 3rd Avenue, boutiques all along it; ditto Eighth/St Marks Place (tho 2nd-3rd is suburban punk kiddie heaven) (which I like!!) , & 10th St too.

Eat at Veselka 2nd Ave/9th St.

Stand up uncomfortably & have an egg cream at Gem Spa, W side of 2nd Ave at 8th St.

On St Marks (=8th St) btw 1st & A - Cafe Mogador is also great.

Though there are some one of a kind boutiques in Soho, and the architecture is beautiful, a lot of it is now mallified, & therefore so is the shopping crowd. Best crowd in NoLita (& not a big crowd either).

The stores I can always find something in are Armani Exchange, French Connection New York, Century 21 and H&M.

Bergdorf's shoes are $$$$ on sale but you gotta love 'em!

Bought my first pair of Manolos there many moons ago.
