The reasons I do it...#1: my type of sandles only come in whole sizes (1 size is 1/2 a size small and does not fit) so I opt for the next larger size and wear sox. #2: I like to buck the norm and just be myself. And ewwwwww to the above reason less than good looking toes. I'm tacky but happy.
|
I was thinking of how ugly socks look under sandals...and then realized how ugly some people's FEET are (cracked/calloused/dirty/icky toenails). Maybe socks under sandals isn't such a bad idea then! :)
|
Oh, jor, we do, too.
independencedaybaby, your mother sounds like a gem. Litespeed Chick, if you want to be a successful snob, you have to learn to spell "poseur" correctly. :-) And to all the rest of you mad spinners, your descriptions alone have rendered me far too fatigued to go to the gym today. (Where's that icon of a woman on a fainting couch when you need it?) |
Cop-out, jor, post it!
|
I had a date once and he wore socks and birkies....I wouldn't see him again.
it's really a big nerd red flag |
independencedaybaby-that was my grandmother!! LOL, bless her heart :)

Hey Folks! It's been three years since this post was started. Let's see what the consensus is now (3 years later). I still feel Sandles are not appropriate for travel -- simply for safety reasons. Around the house, yes. Outside of the house, no. Just yesterday, I saw a 40'ish man wearing shorts and black socks & shoes. It was hilarious! He had no clue!
I juse read all of the posts again and people seemed to enjoy this one. So let's see where we are three years later. |
Are sandals unsafe?
|
Forget the sandals, where the heck is bonniebroad??? I always enjoyed her posts, can't find anything from 2007 or even 2006! :(
|
I miss bonniebroad too.

Socks are fine with Crocs, if the weather is cool.
I prefer little socks with balls on the back... or other really low cut styles. Since I started weriing Crocs, all my foot problems have disappeared. In addition, I could not care less what people think when I am traveling on my own time. I'll dress how I like, thank you very much. I just can't imagine not wearing what I want, what is comfortable, just because someone may look at me funny... unless we are talking religious customs. So, wear your socks if you feel like it. At worst, it will give superficial people something to gawk at! |
Then call me superficial.
Hideous and so are crocs. |
I guess you would call me superficial too - I abhor socks and sandals together - but I think it is something else. I don't understand people who say "as long as I'm comfortable I don't care what others think" - I think that is an antisocial statement. As long as one is out in public it is polite to dress and act and conform in such a way that is acceptable to others - it is called being considerate. Unfortunately, as long as people continue to think only about themselves and their own personal comfort (and this includes fashion) then we will be surrounded by people who could care less that they are in public and could care less about what is appopriate attire etc. Sad.
P.S. This goes for double for people who wear their headphones everywhere in public - but that's another whole can of worms, non? |
it depends on the socks and depends on the sandals. i do think there are certain combinations that are acceptable.
|
I have in the past worn socks and sandals. Right before thanksgiving a few years ago I slipped on some ice and shattered my ankle. It took several rods and screws to repair the fracture. It also took about 3 months for the swelling to go down enough to get my foot into a real shoe. Since I was able to go back to work and it was now December/January in Wisconsin I didn't have much choice about what I COULD wear around the office.
Hope I didn't offend my coworkers like I apparently would have offended some of those on this thread. Sheesh |
Not to mention any names here, but those of you superficial people who think you get to decide what looks acceptable and what does not, I have to ask, "who died and made YOU the guardian of good taste."
I don't particularly care for the look of sandals and socks; wouldn't be caught dead in a pair of Crocs either. There are probably a lot of things I wear that many others don't like. So what? If you are comfortable, clean, and free from objectionable smells go for it. Life is too short to worry about what YOU think of my fashion choices. |
DS and I were eating at fine dining establishment...very pricey...6 or 7 stars. As we stared at all the other diners to see if we could find anything objectionable about what they were wearing, I saw a man wearing baseball caps on his feet and a sock and a sandal on his head. I about dropped a handful of potatoes.

Wearing sandals with socks "is called being considerate"?
OMG! No, you didn't! Not bathing, talking on a cell phone in a manner where others hear you in a public place, or generally doing something that affects someone near you is inconsiderate. What type of shoes someone wears is NOT something that could be inconsiderate... unless of course they are stinky or very dirty. 1. I hate cowboy boots with anything but jeans. I also hate those sweaty look cowboy hats that are so popular in NY and LA. 2. I hate anyone showing ugly feet (fungus, dry cracked skin, bunions, unkept or dirty toenails) even in Manolo Blahniks. 3. I hate those ugly bozo shoes that men are wearing... you know, the ones that have this 1-2" long, flat, square end. 4. I hate the wicked witch of the west pumps. 5. I HATE BEING STUCK IN LINE BEHIND SOMEONE WHO SLOWS EVERYONE DOWN BECAUSE OF HER STUPID HEELS! 6. I hate the clip-clop sound heels make. Does this make the 'offenders' inconsiderate? In cases 2, 5 and 6, maybe. In 1, 3 and 4, NO!!! My shoes are always new and clean. My feet, if exposed, are always soft, clean and tidy. And for the record, I don't wear socks with sandals. Not because it freaks me out or disgusts me... I just always have sandals that have a strap between the toes. Geez, I can't even believe that you said it was 'inconsiderate' to wear socks with sandals. |
TxTravelPro,
If you are referring to kireland's post, I believe you misread it. I think you even misread the line that you quoted because kireland wrote "...it is called being considerate" and that is what you quoted. I believe kireland was referring in general to people who have the attitude that they will wear whatever they please with no consideration to other. Kireland said s/he doesn’t like sandals with socks but did not actually say wearing them was inconsiderate. Feel free to reread kireland's post if that is the one you were referring to. BTW, I really doubt that your shoes are always new. |
<""who died and made YOU the guardian of good taste."">
The Good Taste Fairy is who died and passed on her wand. |
Well, I may have misread it, but it seems to imply that unless you comply to his/her dress code you are inconsiderate.
I look like most of the people that are in the magazines I buy... by the way. So does that make it more acceptable? I mean, if it is in a magazine, it must be ok? Right? I buy new shoes every season and stop weraing them once they get grungy. It's possibly OCD. One more reason that I love Crocs is that I can toss them in the washer with cleaning/car wash rags. Mine average 2-3 wears before they get washed. Maybe I should rephrase that to: My shoes always look new and were bought within the last 6 months. |
I think you did misread or misunderstand my post (thanks for coming to my defense vjpb...). What I was trying to convey is that the attitude that "I'll wear/do whatever I please, my comfort is the only thing that matters) is inconsiderate. If you disagree that is fine. It's just my opinion that the preoccupation some people have with their own personal comfort/desires/space to the exclusion of others when out in public is inconsiderate. While I don't think socks and sandals is at the big deal end of this spectrum of being incosniderate when in public - wearing whatever one wants simply because it is comfortable can lead to inappropriate attire in many cases that I can think of (eg - I know sweatpants and sneakers are comfortable, but they are inappropriate at a nice restaurant or the theatre).
|
the right combo of socks & nice sandals, with a good outfit, in a hot climante, is not the same as wearing sweatpants and sneakers!
|
To be honest, I wouldn't wear socks and sandles, to me personally, it looks a little silly. But, I say do whatever makes you happy! Why would you care what others think of you anyway? That goes that same for people who wear sandles with no socks at all!
|
Socks are never okay with sandals. If you tell yourself they look okay with Tevas, or with Nikes, or with vented sneakers, or for a long day's hike, or with Birks...you're only fooling yourself. They are oil and water. Peanut butter and mint. Please choose one or the other.
|
hey socks and sandals are a fashion statement in Oregon and Washington.
of course you wouldn't wear just any sandal- it would have to be a Birkenstock or similar walking sandal |
Socks and Any Kind of Sandals = TACKY!!
|
Yes, they are a fashion statement. The statement is, "I have zero fashion sense and I can't be taught." Socks with sandals aren't even ironic. They're just plain wrong.
|
Ok karameli, I have to laugh at that last post.
:) |
Well apparently our fashion sense here in the PNW isn't bad enough to stop people from wanting to move here and associate with us:D
|
I have seen plenty of people (even in NYC ... gasp!) wearing sandals with heels (Acceptable? Still sandals?) and pantyhose!
Isn't that still sandals and socks? Also, at what point does a sandal become too casual for you, karameli? Is a kitten heel on a leather 'strappy' sandal really that much different from the same sandal with no heel? What about all the hipsters walking around NY in Yoga pants on Saturday mornings? Is that a lesser crime than sweats? When is a t-shirt cool enough to wear out? When it is skin tight and costs 100.00? It's all so silly. |
Oh, but the socks with heels and pantyhose are ironic! And that always flies. :)
As soon as I can see toes, I don't want to see socks. I'm going to extend that warning to include mary janes, at least for the post-kindergarten crowd. Yoga pants and sweats are always acceptable in my book, by the way. Ditto t-shirts. Even at black-tie dinners. ;) |
well i do wear socks and sandals. just yesterday as a matter of fact flying/airports for a tropical weather vacation... or so sandal straps don't rub bear skin if you are traveling and walking for miles in a day. something low cut as in not up to the ankle or just barely, in a dark pattern w/ a walking or fisherman style sandal works for me.
that said, never never EVER will you catch me w/ a pair of Birks or Tevas on my feet. and I live in Seattle. now THAT would be embarrassing! |
OMG... look at these! Perfect, I had no clue such a thing existed!

Tabis are nothing new. They have been around for ages, it's a Japanese thing. And those aren't what I was talking about -lol!
:-) |
If you can't wear socks with sandals, how do you show off your rainbow striped toe socks???
|
Geez! I'm sorry to have reopened this post. All I was saying was that sandles are, in my opinion, a safety hazzard in airports. With terrorism and all kind of "current-day" threats, you do not want to get caught running in sandles if a terrible situation occurs. Safety first. Pack the sandles, and then wear them when you get to your destination.
|
If I dressed for the airport in clothes I could run fast in to get away from terrorists, I think I'd never be traveling. Are you funnin' us? ...I hope...
Where is bonnie?? Wish there was a way to send out an SOS. |
It's advice. As I said before, keep yourself safe first. Wear the things when you get to your destination. I travel for a living. If there is a situation an I need to get around you, I'm going to run you over. We are getting lax again in our safety awareness & standards. It seems like no one remembers 9-11.
