SoCal camping during summer

Hey all,
Hoping you could help me out with the names of some places in SoCal to camp/hike, etc. for my family camping trip this summer. We'll have to go in August so would prefer not to go to the desert as to avoid heat stroke. We will have a few children with us, but will also have adults who really like to hike. A lot of places are already booked so I'm unsure of where to go from here.........

I just ran into the same problem of trying to plan a camping trip in August (SF Bay Area) only to find all the campgrounds full.

I checked all the state parks within an hour and a half from here and didn't find anything availible.

Next I checked the Santa Clara County parks system, which has 3 or 4 parks that have camping. I found tons of opennings and made my reservation.

I don't have any SoCal-specific advice, but if you haven't already, you might want to check the local counties where you are to see if there are any county parks that have camping.

In Santa Barbara County, try Lake Cachuma. I think you reserve it through the SB County Parks & Recreation. In Ventura County, try Lake Casitas, booked through Ventura County Parks & Rec, I believe. Both of these lakes have naturalist-guided and self-guided hiking options. The downside is that you can't swim in the lakes, since they are reservoirs. You may boat or fish there, however. They also have play areas for the kids. Casitas also has a bike path, I believe.

Try ReserveUSA for all of the campgrounds in the California State Park system. Most of the beachfront campgrounds are full by now.

In San Diego County, try Mt. Palomar. In San Bernardino County, try the campgrounds near Big Bear Lake, Lake Gregory and Lake Arrowhead.

There are many more, but these suggested are at higher elevations in forested areas and should keep you shaded from the August heat. I would avoid Riverside County altogether.

Happy Camping!

i have no doubt that most state parks are already booked. check out this forum - http://www.rv.net/forum/ - campgrounds, resorts and attractions.
it is a very active forum and i'm sure you can get suggestions for privatly run campgrounds.
