So you want to see Oprah

Here's a Chicago Tribune article on trying to get tickets... http://www.chicagotribune.com/travel...,4279008.story

No!

FainaAgain Nov 17th, 2005 01:22 PM

Do they say in the article when she'll be giving away free cars again? Or what's the next freebie?

tondalaya Nov 17th, 2005 01:29 PM

Or maybe some of her Hermés bags.

bonniebroad Nov 17th, 2005 01:31 PM

No, I'm a wee bit tired of Oprah after all these years, and am jealous that she can afford a chunk of Maui and I can't! X(

I think her Favorite Things program, right before the holidays is the best. I think I read somewhere that you can't actually ask for that program..I mean wouldn't everyone?!!!! It's the luck of the draw I believe, but that certainly would be MY choice. Greedy greedy. I wonder if people have to pay taxes on all the loot or if it's considered a gift.

swalter518 Nov 17th, 2005 01:39 PM

They do have to pay taxes-there was a story about that after she gave the cars away. Some people ended up not taking them b/c they couldn't afford the taxes.

LadyOLeisure Nov 17th, 2005 01:40 PM

I'm pretty sure you have to pay taxes -- it's like winning a prize.

JJ5 Nov 17th, 2005 01:48 PM

I'm positive that you pay taxes on the value, just as you do on income $.

But I never understood the "not" taking the prize. If you are that broke you could sell the car, pay the taxes and be enough ahead to buy another car. They do not make you pay your taxes up front.

I went once and of course got a "sob story" day. The best part of the experience was going to Flat Top Grill across the street. Love that place- extra shrimp, please.

I used to love Oprah but now I just find her boring. The last straw for me was a couple of weeks ago she had a whole show on how she remodeled her beautiful house in Santa Barbara. I thought it totally tastless and grandstanding. It just rubbed me the wrong way when there are still so many left homeless after Katrina and she devotes an entire hour to her grand living. I know she donates tons to charity and all, but I really don't care what her guest rooms look like. There are so many important topics that she could cover instead.

Suzie Nov 18th, 2005 11:13 AM

She interupts her guests all the time including her "experts" because she knows everything by now. I suggest she just interview herslf and cut out the middle man. Something really has changed because I used to enjoy the shows (not the early years when she and Donohue used to do all that "shocking" stuff.) The last couple of years I have watched fewer and fewer of them.

GoTravel Nov 18th, 2005 11:23 AM

That was very interesting!

Shane Nov 18th, 2005 11:28 AM

Suzie, are you inferring that Oprah is egocentric and self-adoring?

Suzie Nov 18th, 2005 11:43 AM

I don't know if I was implying that, Shane, but she is probably entitled to have a huge ego since so many people adore her and why shouldn't she join in with that adoration as well?

Shane Nov 18th, 2005 12:39 PM

I just get sick everytime I'm in the grocery line and I'm forced to look at her giant head sticking out from the magazine rag. How can millions adore her? We're certainly a sad society when the almighty consumer makes billionaires out of Oprah, Martha Stewart and Vince McMahon (head honcho of Pro "Wrestling". All power to the above three; Barnum once said a fool and his money are soon departed.
