Snuba on the Big Island
 

Has anyone taken a Snuba trip on the Big Island? I'm going there in October and wanted to try it. Is it worthwhile? Any recommendations for a good company to go with?

I believe FairWinds offers it as an add-on to their regular snorkel trip to Captain Cook memorial.

I've never done snuba on the Big Island, but did do it twice - once in the Caribbean and once on Oahu. After that I went ahead and got scuba certified.

I would highly recommend trying it - you are basically breathing off a hookah set up - a regulator attached by a hose to a tank floating on the surface. The hose is typically 20-25 feet long.

The only drawback to snuba is the likelihood of getting tangled up in the hoses with the other people attached to your tank - both times I did it there were 4 people to one tank.

As long as everyone stays aware of where they are in relation to the float, it shouldn't be too bad - but when you're down there looking at all the fish, you kind of get distracted. Not dangerous, but just a pain to keep untangling the hoses.

Basic rules that apply to scuba also apply to snuba - i.e. no breath holding, and being able to clear your ears - but I tend to see snuba as a bit easier and less of a risk than a "Discover Scuba" dive.

The person taking you out on the trip should clearly explain how to clear your mask and ears, explain about the no breath holding rule and figure out your weighting.
