Snowy Vacation suggestions
Hi- I am looking for suggestions for a 1 week trip for my husbands 40th birthday in Dec 06- Ideally would be somewhere snowy, but not just ski-ing (husband has bad knees!) Ideally we want somewhere with beautiful scenery, dog sledding and other wintry type excursions! We are from the Uk so would prefer ideas for East coast US or Canada.Would be grateful for any suggestions!
Thanks! |
Hopefully many more will chime in. Lake Placid NY may have snow in early Dec. It also has ice skating and dog sled rides. There is a cute little town. I would look into Quebec Canada also. Good luck.

Stowe, Vermont is very scenic and a nice place to chill out and relax as well as ski. You have two dogsledding options there, here is the web site for one:
http://www.dogsledvt.com/ For more general info on Stowe, go to www.gostowe.com However, on the East Coast, you can't be guaranteed snow anywhere in early December. You'd have much better luck going to Utah or Montana...British Airways flies direct to Chicago; you would then catch a connecting flight to Salt Lake City (probably on Delta). And for the sake of your husband's knees, if you can't fly biz or first, plump for premium economy. |
Hi there- thanks for such quick responses- His birthday is actually Dec 28th so it will be the end of December that we will be travelling.

Early december may well be too soon for snow in much of the eastern US. (There may be manufactured snow on ski runs but's its likely there won;t be snow anywhere else.)
You'll do much better going to the Rockies - or up into Canada - or delaying the trip until January. |
I would wait until after New Years to go. The week between Christmas and New Years costs a fortune! Go when everyone goes back to school (Jan. 2 or 3rd!) You will get better rates and have more chance of snow.
I agree that Vermont will be a nice choice for being picturesque. I would still check into the town of Lake Placid and the area of Quebec. Out west in the US would have beautiful scenery. Look into Colorado. You could fly from UK to NY and then onto Colorado. Good luck. |
Happy Birthday, I'm the 8th
