snowshoing in SLC area
I'm looking for some advice on snowshoing in the SLC area. I'd prefer intermediate to advanced trails and free one are always a bonus :)

Hi sllly,
There are lots of public trails in the Park City area. You could get maps and info at the Visitor's Center in town. Also, good trails along the east bench up Emmigration Canyon near the zoo on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. City Creek Canyon would be good too! Right near the State Capitol Building. You could rent snowshoes at REI. |
You could also rent at White Pine Touring in Park City.

thanks. I've already got the shoes (bringing them with me) but am looking for plenty of options for trails. Ideally I'd like to get out and snowshoe 4 or 5 times during my visit.

Silly,
Also, before you go, check with the local Natl Forest offices for avalanche warnings. I would recommend staying on level to gentle ground. |
Hit the REI at 33rd South and get maps of the Wasatch Front--there are good trails in Big and Little Cottonwood Canyon--BUT you MUST call the Avalance Center info line and find out what the danger level is. REI sells several books about ski touring in the Wasatch--many of the same trails can be used. The East Bench around Red BUtte Gardens etc is very populated with dog walkers (I am one of them :-) ) and the trail is tramped down--hard to snowshoe. Millcreek Canyon has a groomed road--it costs $2.25 or $2.50. Emigration Canyon has some trails but they are not necessarily as well marked as the Cottonwood Canyons--but they are closer to town. The Cottonwood Canyon roads can be closed due to avalanche danger so you want to check that out ahead of time.

We would love to have you join us for our little GTG on April 12 in Park City! You must live in the SLC valley somewhere? |
Dayle:
Yep, I do--Upper Aves. I get up to PC for the outlets (w/2 growing kids they are the best) and skiing. One of our goals this year, is to get up there for dinner once a month (when it is not winter). Things have changed on the restaurant scene, so I will be sure to ask for your recommendations. |
Stanton,
When you come up for dinner, be sure to grab a Park Record and check out the "2 fers" on all the best restaurants. Great deals during non-ski season! |
