Snowbird, Brighton or Solitude? Please help!
 

Hi!

I'm trying to finalize a family ski trip. We've decided to go to Utah the first week of April. We are going to spend the first three nights at Stein Eriksen in Park City and then would like to go to one of the better late season areas in Cottonwood Canyon. I do like nice accomodations and Solitude looks like they have some nice new ones to choose from, but how's the skiing? Snowbird looks like the best skiing. Please steer me in the right direction. Thanks for the help!

I stayed at Snowbird a few years ago during the summer and the accomodations were very nice. If you think they also have the best skiing, I'd definitely go there.

Snowbird has great skiing if you are an advanced skier, if you are beginners or intermediate you may like Brighton or Solitude better. Also, if you choose to stay at Solitude and want to ski Snowbird one day, its any easy drive.

Solitude and Brighton are next to each other and you can buy a combination lift pass for both resorts. As a native Utahn I prefer Solitude and/or Brighton to Snowbird, but not by much.

You might also be interested in Snow Basin up near Ogden. This was the host sight of the Olympic downhill events and they spent a lot of money around the resort.

It would be hard to make a bad choice at any of these resorts. This looks to be a good year for skiing. Have fun.

Thanks for the good advice. I'm still struggling with making a final decision, however. I had actually booked Snowbird because of all of the amenities, but then realized this is an expert skiers destination. Would it just be comletely out of the questions for two boys to learn to snow board at Snowbird? Brighton's on hill lodging is very limited or I would definitely consider it. I've heard Solitude's conditions just aren't as good. Please help! Thanks.

Even if you are commited to Snowbird, which also has intermediate runs, you can bus to Alta which is only 15 minutes away.

Yes, but if his kids want to snowboard at Alta they'd be out of luck, because it's only skiers there.....

Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, and Brighton are all close to Salt Lake City. You can book some nice rooms, (even use public transport), and get to any of these destinations quickly. I would choose Brighton for beginners.

As a snowboarder, Brighton is my personal favorite of the three.

For lodging, Solitude was recently taken over by the same company which manages Whistler/Blackcomb -- I expect you'd find the the quality of the lodging to be great. The "back" side of Solitude is painful for snowboarders (long long traverse), but if your sons are just learning, they might not venture back there anyhow.

Snowbird has older (but nice) lodging, and you can save a bit if you are willing to buy the lift tickets without the tram. It's great too, but tends to be busier.

Thanks so much for all of the help and advice. I think I'm going to cancel my current reservations at Snowbird and opt for the less challenging Solitude. Main reasons being the great looking loding and less challenging terrain. My husband would probably prefer Snowbird, but that might should wait 'til our boys are better. Any last thoughts?
