snow in March
 

Im planning a trip for the first week of March. Our goal is to see snow. We were thinking about Portland,Maine. Anyone have useful information and or ideas for our trip.

Where do you live that you have not seen snow?
If you have no experience driving in it, take the train to Portland or northern Vermont.

We live in south florida. I've seen it, but my other 2 friends havent. So I guess Portland is a good choice.

Because Portland is on the coast, it is less likely to have snow than inland and/or higher elevation areas. The whole country is experiencing a snow drought this year so there are no guarantees you will find snow wherever you go in March but, if your choice is New England, your chances would be better in the mts of NH or VT.

Vermont is the place to go to be quite sure of seeing snow in early March. To avoid the risk of driving on snowy roads, drive to Washington DC and ride the Vermonter (train 56) to Waterbury (Stowe) Vermont. Even if the natural snow has not fallen, the ski resort will make some to lengthen the ski season.
The coastal area of Maine may get very little snow this winter.

Vermont isn't getting much snow this year but I agree it is a better bet that we will have snow here in March than that Portland will. Maple sugaring, too. There is also a train that goes from NYC to Rutland Vt (the Ethan Allen) near Killington ski area. Not sure of the train number. the one that goes to Waterbury is the Vermonter and has different numbers for the weekend and week days.

The White Mountains in north central New Hampshire will have snow. You can stay in North Conway and look at snow all morning and shop til you drop in the afternoon.

If you want a resort, the Balsams in Dixville Notch looks like one of those grand Florida resorts from the '20's but features cross country skiing and snowshoeing.

If you want to go farther afield, Quebec City is beautiful and snowy (mostly).

This isn't a good year to see snow. We have a light covering here in central NH but there's nothing on the ground in Manchester and further south. The coast is a lot warmer. Portland would be a fun city to visit. You could do a day trip to NH's White Mountains from Portland. The way it's going, we could have a very dreary landscape in March. I would suggest waiting until next year.
