Snorkeling on Big Island

My son and his wife are leaving for Hawaii on Saturday and they can't really afford to pay for an organized snorkeling trip. If they can find a place to snorkel on their own, can they rent equipment there, and if so which is the best place. They're staying in Kona.

We had our own so we didn't rent, but did get discount sunset cruise tour tickets from them.

mhwhite,

There was a place where the cruise ships dock. Right down the road there is an awesome snorkeling place. There were turtles everywhere. The equipment was $10 per person I believe. We were there on a cruise in July.

Thanks so much for your help. It looks like they can do it themselves without going out on a boat.

Jack's Dive Shop right on Alii Drive also does rentals, I think. The beach with the turtles is Kahaluu Beach--it is on Alii Drive south right before you get to Keauhou. In sourh Kona, Manini Beach in Napoopoo and Kealakakua Bay itself has good snorkeling. Also the area called Two-Step by Place of Refuge is good. (As you are entering Place of Refuge, turn right on the road before you get to the Place of Refuge parking lot, follow the road until you see an area of lava on the left.)

I've been researching this myself for my trip in January.

I would suggest visiting www.shorediving.com for tips on locales.

Best of luck!
