Snorkeling-Molokini or Lanai?
Which outing would you recommend and with what company?
|
When we were on Maui 2 years ago, some of the locals had recommended snorkeling at Honalua Bay on West Maui. It is a protected cove(like bing in a giant fishbowl!). It was also the location of the tour boats that picked up & charged people to go there. You can just drive down the road & pull over. It is a sancuary so it had lots of fish.We also enjoyed snorkeling around the Black Rock @ the Sheraton Maui. Hope this helps. Many people that took the tour to Molokini were not impressed.

I don't know how good the snorkeling was, but my friend just recommended the Trilogy company all-day trip from Maui to Lanai -- breakfast on board, lunch on the beach, snorkeling, trip into Lanai town. She said it was well worth the cost. (We didn't do it because we didn't have a whole day to spare)

The snorkeling at Molokini is underwhelming. Better places from shore. I liked the scenery and the boat ride, though.
|
Definitely Lanai. I also was underwhelmed with Moloklini snorkeling, but Lanai is great. Cant recommend a company, since we just snorkeled off the beach at the Manele Bay resort.
|
I did the Trilogy trip to Lanai and loved it. The staff was very friendly, the number of people wasn't overwhelming, had continental breakfast and a picnic lunch on Lanai.
I can't compare the snorkeling to Molokini as I did not do that trip, but the reason I didn't was becaused from everything that I read, the majority of folks recommended Lanai. |
Hands down, Lanai! I hear Trilogy is wonderful. A less expensive alternative to Trilogy is the Pacific Whale Foundation which leaves from Maalea. PWF, seemed family oriented to me. I also love Honolua Bay and Black Rock :)

We did snorkel at Black Rock. I can't compare it to Lanai or Honolua, but it's great if you're staying in the Kaanapali area because it's right there -- just put on your snorkel gear and walk out into the water right in front of the Sheraton.

Definitely Lanai, with Trilogy's all-day excursion. I've done Molokini twice and it just does not compare with Lanai. Trilogy will divide passengers into two groups. One group snorkels while the other goes into Lanai City and boards ATV's which we drove ourselves to Shipwreck Beach and back. Super excursion!

We also found Molokini underwhelming - lots of people and the snorkeling was okay at best. Honalua was much better. We like to rent snorkel gear for the week and check out spots they recommend at the rental shop - I don't remember the name of where we rented but I think it had "frog" in it's name? Anyway, I think most snorkel rental places will give you a map and tips on the best spots. Have fun!

Ditto Molokini; found the area to be full of diesel fuel and people. In places the air was blue with fumes! Lots of clarity, no fish (maybe an unlucky day?)
|
Ditto Molokini. Probably my least favorite (paid) snorkel trip ever.

Boss Frog! One of two really good local gear chains. The other is Snorkel Bob's.
