Snorkeling in Maui
 

Going to Maui and want to know the best snorkeling spots in the island. Any suggestions?

Molokini and the inlets past Kaanapali.

Olowalu. This is a town on the road to Lahaina/Kaanapoli probably 10 minutes South of Lahaina. You'll see lots of cars parked off the road on the grass. There's great snorkeling here and its easy and free. No boats or paying-to-park required. I snokeled here, Molokini and by Blackrock (Kaanapoli) and this was the most fun.<BR><BR>One caveat, there was a shark sighting here about a year ago...

Not a shark siting but a shark biting. And a woman was killed by a shark here a couple of years ago. There are way better spots to snorkle. Not that you wouldn't run into a shark at any give time anywhere in the ocean.

There are a lot of sharks and attacks in Maui. Don't go way far out or around turtles or whales. Don't go in if you are bleeding. Avoid murkey water. Try to stay around other people.

Our favorite spot was near Napili Bay; I don't know the name of the cove. If your facing the water at Napili bay, go around the rocks on the left side of the bay &amp; there is a cove there that was great. There is a condo there with steps down to the cove but it's marked private; it would have been just as easy to swim there.

The points between Kamaole 1 and 2 and the point between 2 and 3 in Kihei. Good snorkeling and very easy entry and parking.

A lady in her 60's just got bit about 2wks. ago by Kamaole 1 beach, but they stitched her up and she's O.K. Also mile marker 14 is a great place to snorkel but has had shark attacks; New years day this year a guy from Cal. was bit in the Buttocks and had to have about 150 stitches. See Maui News (on line) for newspaper articles re/ these attacks. That said, most shark incidents don't end in fatalities. Use common sense, don't go out too far, and don't swim alone. There are more fatalities on the roads in a week than shark attacks in a year.
