Smoking in CA
 

I am planning a trip to Northern CA in July. Are all hotels in CA non-smoking?

The hotel rooms are designated smoking or nonsmoking. It's the bars and restaurants that are non smoking.

Check with the individual hotels. Each city has different smoking regulations. However, most cities in California no longer allow smoking in any public building.

I believe California State law prohibits smoking in public buildings.

But hotels are not public buildings. You still need to specify smoking or non smoking rooms. Many CA hotels limit smoking to certain floors.

Suzie is right. You will have to specify in your reservation whether you want a smoking or non-smoking room. However, I think that all hotels in California do not allow smoking in the common areas (such as the lobby, foyers, and meeting rooms).

Lisa's right as in most parts of CA you must smoke privately or out of doors far from the entrance to buildings and never in common areas. The exception may be outdoor dining but that will also depend on the policy of a given restaurant. Not all restaurants allow smoking in their outdoor dining areas.

State law prohibits smoking indoors in any building used by the public everywhere in the State. This includes all indoor bars and restaurants. Most hotels have designated smoking or non-smoking rooms or floors.

Well now that "it's the law" has clarified, I suppose that supports what Lisa and I have said. A word of caution, if you attempt to smoke in an outdoor eating area it is better to ask before you light up unless you notice others already smoking. Californians are now accustomed to lots of smoke free environs and many are not friendly when encountering smoke.
