Smoking

I am leaving for Florida in a few weeks for my first time. Does anyone know if you can smoke on the beach???

L Jun 7th, 2001 10:42 AM

Sure you can. Drink too.

Mr. Killjoy Jun 7th, 2001 10:57 AM

Depends. Do you burn easily?

ruby Jun 7th, 2001 11:04 AM

I burn very easily. Thank you for being so concerned!!!!!!

xxx Jun 7th, 2001 12:08 PM

Yes, unfortunately you can smoke on the beach. Make sure you blow the smoke in the face of someone who either hates smoke or is allergic to it. Why don't you at least be considerate and take a walk on the sidewalk why you smoke!

ruby Jun 7th, 2001 12:20 PM

EXCUSE ME!!!!!! Did I say I smoked????? I was just asking if you could. I happen to not smoke and hate smoke. I am doing a column for a paper regarding smoking. Some beaches you can some you can't. I just happened to be going to Florida and wanted to include it in the article!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Joe Jun 7th, 2001 12:27 PM

I'm a little tired of the anti-smoking police and I'm not even a smoker. Polite smokers refrain from smoking within very confined spaces but out-of-doors and smoking areas in restaurants should be considered okay. Bars too. I find it funny that the same people who tend to be anti-smoking fanatics also tend to be the same people who are pro-abortion, tolerant of sexual permissiveness and homosexual special rights, pro-animal rights, anti-hunting and politically correct on all the controversial issues. Just my two cents or three.

hmmmm Jun 7th, 2001 12:27 PM

You're doing research for a column on this site? Oh great. Shouldn't you be finding your facts from a more official source like the PD or sherriff or whomever is the law in Florida?

Mr. Killjoy Jun 7th, 2001 12:34 PM

Ruby: "smoke," "burn," ...get it? <BR> <BR>Oh well, all that sand is one big ashtray anyway, right? <BR> <BR>All of us here stranded on Fodors Isle hope you are joking about the "doing a column for a paper." <BR> <BR>That's one of those lil' ole cliche troll conspiracy theories here: that lazy-arse columnists do their "research" by posting generic questions and use OUR answers to inflate your stories. <BR> <BR>You wouldn't do that, would you, without FIRST mentioning why you were gathering information, such as "I am leaving for Florida in a few weeks for my first time. Does anyone know if you can smoke on the beach???" That would be journalistic fraud, huh? <BR> <BR>But I don't think you are one of those. No, for goodness sake. Your writing style doesn't lend itself to literary journalism, let alone the Springfield Shopper. <BR> <BR>So... in retrospect of the aforementioned facts, I take it you're just stirring up the pot a little. Congrats on you! <BR> <BR>TROLL ALERT!!!

Slammed Jun 7th, 2001 12:48 PM

The journalistic integrity in this country sure has gone downhill when "journalists" posts useless questions on a travel forum to do their research....

Trollingfordollars Jun 7th, 2001 01:04 PM

Question regarding this conspiricy theory: So do you think Fodors journalists go trolling on other sites (like R.J.Reynolds.com) looking for articles for THEIR articles? <BR> <BR>(Discuss amongst yourselves...)

James Jun 7th, 2001 02:27 PM

Hmmmmmmmmmm, Joe's post makes me think of that comedy routine "you know your a redneck when........".. hey Joe....some sunblock on your neck might help...

Mr. Christian Jun 7th, 2001 02:52 PM

James, I think you started a new thread: "You might be a smoker if..." !!! <BR> <BR>"You might be a smoker if you watch 'Nicotine at Night.'" <BR> <BR>"You might be a smoker if you're sick and tired of all that talk about Air Jordans" <BR> <BR>"You might be a smoker if you believe all of the leftist-thinking, commie-luvin' Hollywood is out to brainwash our children with titles of shows like 'FRESH Prince of Bel AIR.'" <BR> <BR>"You might be a smoker if you are against subsidizing corn farmers to create ethenol and help defer the high cost of gasoline, but by gawd give them toe-backy farmers a lot of money for a one-stop crop."

jason Jun 7th, 2001 04:09 PM

Hey Joe (jstarrett), <BR>In honor of Gay Pride Month why don't you help us out here and expound on all those "homosexual special rights". Do they include: <BR>- not being able to marry <BR>- denial of next-of-kin designation for hospital visits <BR>- being kicked out of armed forces for merely uttering sexual preference <BR>- being pinned with a pink triagle and being marched into death camps under Hitler <BR>- the pleasure of being on the receiving end of countless acts of violence and horrible jokes in today's society <BR>- the joy of knowing President Bush refuses to declare June as Pride Month because "it's wrong..." <BR> <BR>I could go on, but do tell ------ what's on your list?

topper2 Jun 7th, 2001 07:03 PM

This must assume it's rightful place at the top!

Clem Jun 7th, 2001 07:25 PM

We don't allow no gay type people 'round these parts, but we luuuv our varmint huntin and skoal and knockin up the young 'uns while they're fresh. <BR>You got a problem with that? <BR>

Snidely Jun 8th, 2001 07:05 AM

Why is everybody picking on Joe? If you re-read his post you may find that he is correct by most Americans standards, and thought processes. Our freedoms are being taken away by the political left. If anyone here has the foresight****hindsight to look back in history at the attitude, and patriotism of our fore-fathers, please chime in for our most basic freedoms.

ruby Jun 11th, 2001 09:53 AM

Do you bunch of no minds not have anything better to do. To take such a simple question and turn it in to discussing about gays Etc. Do you guys have jobs??? I guess Not???? Ge a life you bunch of no minds!!!!!!

joecamel Jun 11th, 2001 10:14 AM

x Jun 11th, 2001 10:29 AM

Joe's a jerk. As are most extremists of any ilk!

J T Kirk Jun 11th, 2001 10:47 AM

Hey, do we know how to have a good time or what? <BR>I don't smoke. (Ruby, I'm not saying you do.) I don't really care if other people smoke. But, I wish they wouldn't drop their butts on the beach when they're done smoking. Yecchhhh!!!! <BR>Talk about being inconsiderate.

whitmonk Jun 11th, 2001 10:54 AM

Even tho I try to respect other people's rights, I have to admit it bothers me to see my state becoming an ashtray. <BR>Example 1: While waiting for a green light at a heavily used underpass, I glanced to the side of the road and saw what must have been at least a bucket's worth of butts in the gutter <BR>. <BR>Example 2: About a month ago I was at a concert on the beach in Clearwater and everything was just about perfect - Jimmy Buffett-style music, nice cool breeze from the water, soft cool sand beneath my feet - no, wait a minute - is that a cigarette butt my toes are diggin up? And another? and another? And then to top it off, with room to sit (or stand) wherever you want, the guy next to me lights up, smoke blowing in my face, then puts it out in the sand along with all the other butts! <BR> <BR>So why can't so many smokers respect EVERYONE'S right to a clean environment? Is that really asking too much?

Lazy Journalists Jun 11th, 2001 02:35 PM

I teach journalism and news writing, and while I encourage my students to be creative in their research, I also hold them to higher standards than hearsay gathered on a website chat-area, which is what this forum is. <BR> <BR>I have to say I'm particularly annoyed when someone posts a question here for the obvious purpose of filling up a few graphs for tomorrow's paper. <BR> <BR>If they are going to use direct quotes from people, fine, but the people should be told that's what will happen, even if they are posting anonymously. <BR> <BR>If the reporter/columnist is going to report info gathered here as if it were definitive, from a reliable source, it's just plain lazy and not good research. <BR> <BR>Ruby, "hmmmmm" is right -- why aren't you going to authoritative sources instead of anecdotal comments?

donjuan Jun 11th, 2001 06:57 PM

Not only can you smoke and drink on the beach, I highly recommend sex on the beach as well.
