Sleet in April NYC?

I know I am driving everyone crazy with my questions, but we just checked the weather for next Friday (13th), oh my gosh, did not realize that until just now, anyway it is giving sleet. Is this for real? We are from Georgia and wearing capris and flip flops. Should we plan sweaters, coats, gloves, scarves? I was planning long sleeves and rain type jackets. Do people still dress for winter in April in NYC?

travelbuff Apr 4th, 2007 01:30 PM

The forcast for the next 10 days or so is cooler than normal. This weekend we expect Easter Sunday to be 45, so not really spring weather as of yet.

I would bring sweaters and warmer clothing that you can layer up or down as the weather dictates. A zip=out lined raincoat and sweaters will keep you warm as you run around the city, and if we get lucky and the weather turns warmer you just layer down, for comfort.

The bigge is to bring very comfortable walking shoes.

I just looked outside and the tree in my yard is not even thinking of sprouting leaves just yet, so we are not quite done with winter.

uga1015 Apr 4th, 2007 01:37 PM

Thanks, 45 is definitely coat weather to me, probably even turtleneck. Will I look stupid with gloves?

gail Apr 4th, 2007 01:42 PM

If it is cold, you will look stupid WITHOUT gloves. It is really difficult to pack for weather in the northeast in the spring and fall - it can be warm and mild or rainy/snowy and really raw. In any event, it will get significantly colder at night, often near freezing, even in April.

For point of reference, anyplace north of NY, it is considered risky to plant tender annual plants until Memorial Day because risk of frost/freeze.

We are headed to Savannah from Boston this weekend and had hoped to wear flipflops and shorts - but seems it will be cool even in your state.

uga1015 Apr 4th, 2007 01:47 PM

It does look like it will be cooler next week but is giving in the 70's for Athens. Surely, Savannah will be warm enough for reefs (my favorite comfortable walking shoes). I guess I won't be wearing them for NYC. I am completely changing what I am bringing. I would rather be too warm as too cool! I am dragging the gloves and scarves back out.

Annabel Apr 4th, 2007 02:41 PM

The weather here is cold and miserible. The beginning of April is very iffy and can be record breaking heat or snow...and everything in between. I don't bring out my summer clothes until after Memorial Day (I can remember wearing a leather jacket for some parties in the Hamptons). It seems we don't really have a true Spring season anymore - it goes from cold one week to heat the next.

That being said it is definately still winter here and in NYC you will look ridiculous wearing anything else but the appropriate clothing for the weather. So dress for the weather not for the calender. I have not seen the updated weather report for Easter, but the last I heard is sleeet/snow showers. It is not abnormal to have snow in April here.

jamierin Apr 4th, 2007 03:11 PM

Best to layer your clothes, and if it gets too warm, you can remove something. Lined trench coats are good for NYC this time of year.

seetheworld Apr 4th, 2007 03:15 PM

It is a very raw day today. Don't wear your flip flops, lol. Bring gloves and layers (and socks).

starrsville Apr 4th, 2007 03:19 PM

We had hail yesterday in Georgia - and Sunday's low may break a record set in the 1800's - 32 degrees. And, I'm planning on Easter sunrise service on top of a north Georgia mountain?!?!

You aren't going to be wearing capris and flip flops in GA next week! :-)

uga1015 Apr 4th, 2007 03:23 PM

No, I am leaving the Reefs at home. During the day are tennis shoes okay or should I plan something else? I do want to dress for the theater, but during the day I need to be as comfortable as possible. I am starting to think I need boots.

lizziea06 Apr 4th, 2007 03:28 PM

It's ridiculous to look to a forecast 10 days from now for guidance. Usually weather.com can't even tell me what's going on outside my window. You've been given good advice about dressing in layers.

uga1015 Apr 4th, 2007 03:38 PM

You are so right about weather.com! They are never right here either. I will just do layers. I will probably think it is cold there anyway. I guess I was just thinking about the weather here in general, which is not even comparable to new york.

jt7dreamz Apr 4th, 2007 03:59 PM

ok weather.com might be wrong but its sleeting right now in grammercy.

uga1015 Apr 4th, 2007 04:10 PM

I'm convinced! I am planning for winter weather. If we luck up and get decent weather I will buy t-shirts...lol

nytraveler Apr 4th, 2007 04:12 PM

It's not the polar ice cap - just a little cooler than usual. Bring a rain coat or jacket and several sweaters, an umbrella and make sure you have comfy waterproof shoes. You don;t need winter coats or scarves of gloves - it's not THAT cold. (And NYC never has summer weather in April - for more than a very rare day or two.)

uga1015 Apr 4th, 2007 04:28 PM

I feel so stupid, but what are waterproof shoes? I do not have any such shoes. When I think of comfortable shoes I think of tennis shoes if I cannot wear my reefs. They are definitly not waterproof. What should I get?

GoTravel Apr 5th, 2007 05:38 AM

I remember one May (the weekend before Memorial Weekend) I was in New York and it was freezing rain the entire time. I left the mid 80s in South Carolina with capri pants and open toed shoes and we hit NYC and froze!

I had to buy a coat, long pants, shoes and socks.

ellenem Apr 5th, 2007 08:01 AM

On my way to work in NYC today, it snowed lightly for about 15 minutes.

I say bring the lighter layers everyone mentions. Do bring gloves--if you're a person who feels cold in general, you will feel much warmer in a lighter coat with gloves.

granniem Apr 5th, 2007 08:24 AM

the one thing I think you should remember is that most people do not care how you dress. There are so many weirdo s here in NY we will walk right past you without looking twice.

Dress comfortable. Remember you are on vacation.

Sara Apr 5th, 2007 10:57 AM

Uga, I don't think you need waterproof shoes, just water-resistant ones. Whatever you would wear at home in cooler weather on a wet day should be fine. We were in NYC last month, didn't bring boots, and had one snowy - slushy day. I wore my leather Merrills, and that was fine. You can always spray some silicone spray onto a pair of leather shoes to make them more water-repellent if you're worried about it - that might work on canvas, too, although I've never tried it. You could ask a salesperson at your shoe store (where you can buy the spray) if that would work. If you bring two pairs of shoes, you'll have a spare in case one pair gets wet.

travellamb Apr 5th, 2007 11:45 AM

I have to agree with the layering. It's very unpredictable - it can be warm one day and cold the next - we recently had a day in the 70s followed by a day in the low 50s. Also, because the weather is so confusing, some places have heat, some air conditioning. For example, yesterday walking into a department store I was met with a blast of heat and then on the subway the air conditioning was on - in both cases the temperature control was appropriate but you can see how you might want the option to adjust.

You will see everything here. Thick down winter coats with flip flops! I think a sweater or two, with your rain type jacket and long sleeves should be fine. And if it's not, it's a good excuse to shop! Have fun!

Annabel Apr 5th, 2007 12:02 PM

Also just to let you know the evenings are going to be very cold. Tonight will be 28 and the following days up to Sunday will be 32 degrees. That's definately not flip flop weather.

nytraveler Apr 5th, 2007 12:12 PM

Any decent walking shoes (some leather sneakers - but by no means all) are waterproof (solid where the sole connects to the shoe - so the water doesn;t come in when you walk in the rain). Not waterprooof boots for standing around in streams.

And FYI - we had flurries again this AM.

uga1015 Apr 5th, 2007 12:16 PM

I think the weather here this week is preparing me! It is cold, and getting colder. I think I am skipping the sunrise service.

You guys have given me a good grasp of what to bring. I have added a couple of sweaters, and jeans go either way. Probably need something warmer for the Broadway show. I really had put my gloves up but, as previously said, need them here now. That wind hurts!

gb944 Apr 6th, 2007 03:48 AM

Flurries in NYC this morning and high of mid 40s predicted for easter.

Annabel Apr 6th, 2007 05:16 AM

I thought of this this morning....
Watch the Today Show and see what people in the square are wearing. That will give you a guide to the weather and how to dress. This morning there were lots of scarfs and gloves. Just an idea!

michelleNYC Apr 6th, 2007 07:21 AM

uh... it's 34 degrees right now. you certainly should wear gloves and a coat!

uga1015 Apr 7th, 2007 08:56 AM

Believe it or not it was 28 here this morning....colder than New York. My daughter and I were out this morning and came back in and changed our minds again...turtlenecks.

spsand Apr 7th, 2007 12:52 PM

Hi,
As a person who lives in manhattan, i will say that you have gotten excellent advice on this thread.......all of the posters were right on.....i had to laugh at the idea that there are so many weirdos here that nobody will even notice you or what you are wearing.....how true......
It has been very cold here and i was even chilly yesterday in a down jacket ......the wind chill...brrrrr

i must admit that i am guilty of the flip fops and down jacket outfit as well......sometimes i am too lazy to put on shoes so i run out barefooted with a down coat....

i would bring either a down jacket to throw over everything or a lined raincoat with blazers, pantsuits, jogging outfits and sweaters to layer.......gloves , yes, scarf , yes, Maybe we will all be lucky and have some beautiful weather , but it pays to be prepared.....even if it warms up, we will not be ready with our lightweight clothes out yet, so everyone will just "make do" Enjoy

uga
The wind and moisture in NY can make it feel cooler than it is -- all those narrow corridors of streets with tall buildings act like wind funnels. Your last post sounded like you've got a grasp on what to do. Layers are best if you're out all day, you can always change to something special for the theatre and cab that part if it's colder than your outfit/footwear. Have a great time.

Colette Apr 7th, 2007 02:01 PM

uga....I was in NYC 2 weeks ago, and also wasn't sure what to pack. In every picture of me, I'm wearing my denim jacket, my wool scarf, and my purple leather gloves. :) Do remember that the buildings are tall, and many streets don't get the warm sunshine.....I almost did NOT pack the scarf and gloves, but am SOOOO very glad that I did! I had decided that if it got any colder, I'd just go buy something warm......'cus I didn't want to pack everything from capris and flip-flops to jeans and coats. and if you pack your umbrella, it won't rain. (I hauled the umbrella and it didn't rain once all 4 days). :) Went to the theatre 3 nights, after sightseeing all day.....and there were people wearing party dresses, as well as people wearing blues jeans. Don't fret about what to wear. just be comfortable! Have a great time!!! Colette

uga1015 Apr 7th, 2007 02:02 PM

I need to join the post "I love New Yorkers" You guys are so nice. If I had not gotten on this forum I would not be bringing warm enough clothes. I freeze all the time so I will probably not get too warm! I am so excited!

uga1015 Apr 9th, 2007 10:14 AM

Hey guys,

Just wondering how the weather is in NYC today. I am on the countdown and so excited.

ellenem Apr 9th, 2007 10:24 AM

Chilly still--low 40s at best

julesj66 Apr 9th, 2007 12:06 PM

It's pretty damn cold here in Midtown today. Sunny at least. Looks like slightly warmer low 50's by Wednesday.
