Sleeping Cost
During the month of August, while doing a drive yourself tour, What amount should I budget for accommodations? There are two of us and we are not looking for the best, but we do want nice places to stay.

Thanks

Where will you be? This can make a big difference.
Regarding the question of where I will be in Arizona ... will arrive in Phoenix, rent car and travel the entire state and finish in Las Vegas.

Consider getting an Entertainment guide -- save up to 50%. Wow! August is a realllllly hot month for driving in Arizona & Nevada -- Yikes! Also, since you are driving, very often you can find these free lodging guides at better gas stations & truck stops w/ coupons you can use for really discount lodging at some great places. Shouldn't be hard anyway during that time.
*IF* you are willing to do a little "roughing it," you can substantially reduce your lodging by sleeping in a tent. Buy one for $50 at a discount store after you arrive, it'll pay for itself with two uses. When you're done, just donate it to a charity store (Salvation Army, Goodwill, Saint Vincent de Paul) and take a tax deduction. This isn't for everyone, but it can be done. Tent sites are less than $15 at many places, both public and private.

We use motel chains. We like Hampton Inn and Days -- $50-70 range -- but they have a continental breakfast which is very convenient.

We've also used Best Western, Super 8, and Choice (Comfort and Quality). But These vary in quality. The new La Quinta Inns and Suites are excellent but a little more expensive.

Most of these have web sites and you can check rates.

We've traveled most of New Mexico and Arizona, but it took us several two-week trips.

You'll enjoy it!
