SLC to Zion stopover
We were planning a two-day stop in SLC before driving to Zion NP. But having been in SLC many times, we are thinking of spending only one night there, and are looking for an interesting (or scenic) stopover about half-way in between. Appreciate any suggestions.

This is more than half-way, but you might consider stopping at Cedar City and visiting Cedar Breaks. You could also stop and see Kolob Canyon, part of Zions, the entrance is on I-15 going south from Cedar City to Springdale.

Torrey, Utah. If you leave SLC early enought you will have time to visit Capitol Reef National Park which is just a few miles from Torrey. The next day drive Scenic Hwy 12 which takes you though Escalante - Grand Staircase National Monument and maybe have a quick stop in Bryce National Park. You will then drive thought Red Canyon before entering Zion on the Tunnel Road (Hwy 9)
In comparison Interstate 15 is pretty BORING! Utahtea |
Thanks to both of you. I'll rethink our itinerary accordingly!

But Utahtea - SLC to Torrey is pretty "boring" too - and many miles away. If Rolfg was looking to go to Bryce as well, then I would agree with you.

Dutch,
Not all of I-5 is "boring". But if I had my choice between I-5 and Scenic Hwy 12...I'd go 100 extra miles to do that drive! Besides you can see Capitol Reef, get a view of Bryce without even going into the park, drive thought Red Rock and come in the tunnel entrance to Zion. It's 306 miles from SLC to Zion National Park via I-15 It's 402 miles from SLC to Zion via I-15, Hwy 50, Hwy 24, Hwy 12, Hwy 89, Hwy 9. It will take a little longer to drive because these are mostly on two lane highways instead of the Interstate. It's 335 miles to do Cedar Breaks & Kolob Canyon section of Zion and spend the night in Cedar City....which as you mentioned is another good idea. Utahtea |
Utahtea - I agree. Next time you are in Eastern Utah, let me buy you a drink. You probably do more for Utah tourism than any one else. Keep up the good work.

Make it a ~o) of coffee and you have a deal! \:D/
Eastern Utah...is that north, mid or southern ((?)) Utahtea |
Actually mid eastern Utah. And Coffee it is.

Mid-eastern Utah....color me green with envy!
Utahtea...wishing I lived in Utah! |
