Skyline Drive--Is early Nov. too late for fall foliage?
In New Jersey our schools are closed the beginning of November for a state Teachers Convention and we were thinking about a short trip to Virginia to ride the Skyline Drive. Is that too late to enjoy the fall foliage? Also, if we plan to stay just three or four nights, where would you recommend so that we would be able to see as much of the area as possible? Thanks all!!

Most likely too late!

Perhaps if you travel a bit further into N.C. you'll still see nice colors but mid October is probably the peak.
|
Too late for sure. Don't know about beth48's suggestion about NC (I'm in VA) but Skyline Drive does't go to NC--the Blueridge Parkway does.

Early November is usually peak in central NC. There are some parks and lovely drives if you want to come to Durham at that time.
|
You can come to southeastern Virginia. Colors here usually extend into the first week of November.

Please plan to go even though the leaves will be past peak - the crowds will be less. Skyland will be open thru the month so try to stay there.Their lodging is adequate but try to leave all food in the car to discourage attracting mice. If the weather is OK, 20-30 miles of Skyline Drive should be OK. Consider a day trip to Charlottesville where you can enjoy Monticello and a little exposure for the kids to the Univ. of VA.

When I ran the New York City Marathon November 5th of last year, the leaves were right at their peak in Central Park.
I would make a reservation and take a chance. You'll never know for sure! |
