Sky Terrace @ Hotel Washington

I am meeting relatives in DC next month who have never been to DC. I have heard about The Sky Terrace atop the Hotel Washington. I was wondering if reservations are needed and in general if it is worth taking them up there for a few drinks and something to eat. Is it open all day, or just in the evening? Any opinions? We are also staying at The Mayflower Hotel. Any opinions on that property would also be appreciated. I have been reading both good and bad about The Mayflower.

I haven't been to the Hotel Washington for a long time but the Sky Terrace is a great place to sit outside and have drinks. I suspect reservations are not necessary but you could call them and request an outside table with a view.

The Mayflower Hotel is an old elegant Washington hotel. I've never stayed there but it's in a great location.

Have a great visit.

It might be a bit slower in September but last summer when we tried to go, there was a very long line. You should call and see if they take reservations. It was a great view and we were disappointed to leave but too hungry to wait the hour or so they quoted.

The Mayflower is one of my favorite hotels in Washington. A grand old hotel in a great location.

Hi Billy,

I go to happy hour at the Hotel Washington sometimes in the summer, and it can get crowded if it's really nice, but I never make reservations and usually do fine. I'm not sure about lunch, but I've been there as early as 4pm and it is open.

As for the Mayflower, I haven't stayed there, but I love going there for martinis. The bar is called the Town and Country Lounge, and the bartender, Sam, has been there for about 25 years and he has a menu of 101 martinis. They are about $10, but come in really big glasses and they are delicious. He also does magic tricks if you ask him nicely. They also have free food at happy hour and sofas and comfy armchairs to sit in. They have a guy playing the baby grand piano as well.

I'm going to the Hotel Washington after work on Wednesday, so I'll check out the crowds for you.

Welcome to DC!
Karen

Thanks to all of you for your answers. Going to the Sky Terrace will be a must on our sightseeing list. And, Karen, I look forward to your update on the Sky Terrace. I just read in a DC guidebook (can't name the other "F" travel book here :) ) about the bartender at the Mayflower and his magic tricks. I also read about the bar at the Willard Hotel serving mint juleps. Any input on that?

The Willard is another beautiful old hotel that has been renovated. If you're in that area, walk across Pennsylvania Avenue and check out the Ronald Regan Center. If you're in that area, you won't be far from Hotel Washington.
