Skip Bayfield

Bayfield has to be the most over rated spot in Wisconsin. It's expensive, not much to do or see (unless you're heavily into sailing) and the Big Top Chataqua (sp?) certainly doesn't live up to the hype.

I've never even heard of Bayfield. What is it supposedly known for?

If you live in the Midwest, you hear quite a bit about Bayfield. sposed to be a worthwhile summer resort area on Lake Superior. But I second the original poster - we finally made a Bayfield stop, with some anticipation, last fall. Admittedly, tourist season was over, but I couldn't believe what a tired little town it was. There must be one or two good photo angles in the town and that's what gets plastered on all the tourist hype.

I've read others comment here on the wonders of Duluth, MN. Someone even compared it to San Francisco as I recall.
I don't get it.
The drive along the lake is nice and everything, and relative to other cities in the area Duluth may be the best thing going, but if you're not from the area it's hard to grasp.

I'll third what rj and Anon had to say. Also Madeline Island, which is a short ferry ride from Bayfield and is much hyped also, is a major disappointment. We suffered through an amatuerish production at "Big Top" that had something to do with the history of Bayfield. The most charitable thing I can say about it is that it SUCKED Big Time.

I agree with the posters about Bayfield. We stayed at the Rittenhouse and loved the dinner there and our room but were BORED out of our minds. There are not many things to do in Bayfield. I don't agree with the poster about Duluth tho - we love Duluth. We have enjoyed the harbor area and the lakewalk and watching the boats come in and also enjoy the whole North Shore of Lake Superior. Much more to do there than Bayfield.
