Skiing - New Hampshire
 

I'm looking at booking a skiing trip for next winter. What is New Hampshire like for skiing? I've skied in Killington before, but fancied a change this time around. What is the snow fall like (or is it artificial!) <BR>Where are the best places to stay, we're possibly going to stay in North Conway. <BR> <BR>Help would be appreciated!

Hi Gareth-Can't comment on places to stay because I've always done day trips to hte Conway area, but CAN comment on the skiing. You'll have plenty of different ski areas to choose from: Attitash, Black, Wildcat, Cranmore, Shawnee Peak, Sunday River, and Bretton Woods to name a few. Of those, I personally like Wildcat the best-narrow, steep, windy trails-the way skiing used to be! Attitash and Bretton Woods have wider, more tamer slopes. Hven't skiied Cranmore or Black so cannot comment on those. Sunday River is a little bit of a drive, but is a big resort-similar to, but not as big as Killington. Shawnee Peak, also in Maine, is a smaller, more family-oriented area. <BR>Haven't stayed there, but check out teh Mount Washington Hotel-it's gorgeous and is acrosss the street from Bretton Woods: www.brettonwoods.com <BR>Hope this helps!

PS. IMO, the snow will be best in late February/early March. This past season we had record-breaking snowfall, and most of it came in March. Hope this helps!

Staying in North conway would be much cheaper than say Jackson NH. there is plenty of choices regarding accommodation try ww.4seasonresort.com under lodging they have a link to the websites of most of the hotels, motels, Inns. I like Loon Mountain. Killington is way too crowded with NYC socialites.

Gareth, <BR> <BR>We like the Franconia side of NH best for skiing - Loon, Waterville, Cannon. The area is beautiful and there aren't all outlet stores. I just prefer it to the North Conway area because it's not so touristy. If you're looking for slopeside accomodations Loon and Attitash both have them. Waterville Valley has a lot of different types of accomodations and a skiier bus that runs the loop of condos and hotels. But I guess most ski areas have that. <BR> <BR>There is always plenty of man made snow and taking a guess on snowfall is just a guess. Sometimes December has plenty and other years theres not much until mid-Jan - then if you have some rain it's all ice. Best guess for lots of real snow would be Feb. March. <BR> <BR>Have fun..

Bretton Woods is expanding trails like crazy, and the Mt. Washington Hotel is now open year round. Loon Mountain also has an excellent reputation. My all time favorite is Sunday River in Bethel, Maine. Good Luck!
