Ski vacation and no snow.
 

Hello.

Coming from Oregon for spring break. Booked a family ski trip to Solitude for the last week of March. We have skied in Utah for many years, but this is the first time we have booked a trip so late in the season AND booked it at a resort (as opposed to staying in Park City at the Marriott). Well, it does not look like there is going to be much snow left by the time we get there and we can't get out of the condo rental. We have three kids, ages 16, 12 and 3. Any suggestions for what we can do to keep everyone happy? Don't mind driving down from the mountain and would even consider a longer day trip. Thanks!

Usually - the next canyon over - Little Cottonwood is it - at Alta and Snowbird - they get the most snow. Hope you can find something - as it's such a shame to go to such a beautiful ski state as Utah and not have much snow.

I believe Park City fires up it's snow making equipment - but still - nothing quite like having a mountain covered with the real deal.

Here is the Alta snow report. Hopefully - they are getting some of the big storm that just hammered us down here in San Diego - and left a couple of feet of snow in the mountains.

Thanks. We are from Lake Oswego. I guess we can try the other canyon and Park City as a last resort. I was at Park City early Feb and they were doing a good job of making snow. Hope they'll still be making it this late in the season. Was wondering what sights there might be down in SLC. Hate to spend all of that money on lift tickets and day care if the skiing isn't going to be very good. We are there for 4 days of skiing.

There is 147" (12 feet) of snow at Mt. Bachelor outside Bend.
Why would you think Utah would be any better than that?
There is a ski bus up to the mountain from Bend if you did not want to drive.

Booked it back in January, took a gamble. When Utah is good there is nothing better!

I suspect that Utah snow is fluffier than Oregon snow. But this last California storm might be making its way east.

I just checked snowbirds web site and they got 35" just from this last storm (last 48 hours). There are 108 " mid mountain . Solitude wont be that different. Skiing willstill be good in a week.

I went yesterday and it was a nice powder day.

Utah generally gets the best, lightest powder with Aspen/Vail/Colorado arguably second. (Note - I don't count Grand Targhee - http://www.grandtarghee.com/ the true powder capital with 50 more inches than Alta's normal 450 - as it's too hard to get to, and ditto with nearby Jackson Hole :) )

And Dayle - glad to hear you just got a nice dump back there. Liked skiing Solitude - but we usually styed at Alta or over in Park City.

Thanks for the pep talks. I guess it can't all melt by next week. At least we can enjoy some sunshine - a treat this time of year for Oregonians.

The skiing should be fine. If you get bored--then try the new Museum of Natural History (amazing place!), or the Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point--dinosaurs, the Planetarium is an interesting 1-2 hour diversion, Jump Around Utah is a great place for bouncing around to get energy off. But I think there will be plenty of snow for a 4 day trip!!

Just wanted to let you know that we did make it to the Museum of Natural History, and, you were right! It was amazing. Afterwards, a late lunch at the Red Iguana made for perfect day in SLC. Thanks!

Since you brought this topic back to the top, you don't have to go any farther than Mt. Bachelor to find snow over 100" deep.

khor: Glad to hear it all worked out. And lunch at Red Iguana is almost worth the trip alone :-)
