Ski Season Underway in Colorado

After being suspended for 116 days, the ski season resumed in Colorado on Friday with the opening of Arapaho Basin. Some camped out for several days in advance so that they could be first off the chair. The early forecast for the season is another year of above average snow fall. Loveland probably will open this week. The base was 15".

Get those rental skis out for the rocks!! LOL

Really? I thought last year was below-avg snow. That is really early, didn't know they started that soon. Well, I went to Aspen last year so this year I'll probably try Oregon or Tahoe again, if they get snow.

I hope we have the type of winter we had last year: Denver was mild, and the mountains got plenty of snow.

The hysteria about opening day is always silly IMO. We are in Winter Park now, and it's gorgeous clear weather for hiking and biking.

Fall is wonderful. No need to rush winter.

Christina, out of curiosity, what makes you make that decision in mid-October? LOL

Tabernash2 Oct 19th, 2014 12:18 PM

Because she went to Aspen last year?

I hope Tahoe gets snow this year. That's where DD will be skiing for the most part.

I got that--really. It sounded as if she doesn't expect snow this year because of 15" now!! And my rocks comment. LOL

Who knows what each season will bring but it very nice when it starts early. But year in and year out, the Colorado skiing is almost always better than anywhere else. And the season is much longer in Colorado than most other places. I solve the rock problems my not hitting rocks and have the annual tune up done in January.

It may be silly to some to make a big deal of the first slope to open but it kind of fun. The line for the first day was very long. It is a big party. I have always said I am going to do it - maybe next year.

It has nothing to do with the snow, don't know why you thought that. Because I'm not rich and live on the East Coast so can only afford one ski trip a year out west. And I like to have a little variety so don't go to the same place every year, that's all. It has nothing to do with the above snow report and it is pretty easy for me to make such decisions in advance.

How could anyone say anything offensive about Colorado skiing?

Fantastic, got to love the start of the season in Colorado. A long season in Arapahoe Basin is excellent for those that don’t have much free time to travel there to ski – it gives you more options. I am planning on going back to CO this year, hoping to visit Beaver Creek Resort as a special for an anniversary with my wife.

Beaver Creek is very nice - touch expensive. Always ski there the first week of Dec with friends just as most of the mountain is starting to open. The have a nice tradition of hot choc chip cookies as you are coming off the slope at the end of day.

I heard that Tabernash got 3.5" of snow! Hopefully that means snow fell on Winter Park slopes, too.
