ski accomodation vail
We are coming over from New Zealand, via NYC,WDW for skiing. We have 7 nights in Steamboat then want to ski the Vail area. We have 40 nights accomodation to pay for and are keen to spend as little as possible, while still having wonderful holiday. We have looked on VRBO for places in Vail, however as you would expect they are expensive. What would it be like to stay somewhere else and get shuttles in each day? It seems alot cheaper at Breckenridge, however we want to ski at Vail as well. Appreicate your comments. Regards Kate

Kate, I have never stayed at Vail, but I have skied at Keystone, next door to Breckenridge. If I remember correctly, there is a pass you can buy in the BR/Keystone/Beaver Creek area that gives you one or two days at Vail. (All these resorts are owned/managed by the same company.) It might be cheaper to find a condo in the BR area and base yourself there, then get that pass that gives you a day or two at Vail. I think Vail is about 1-1.5 hours drive from BR, and I'm assuming you will have a car, since you're also going to Steamboat.
I went to the Breckenridge website to try to confirm this, but they no longer have info about the tickets online since the lifts are closed for the season. Perhaps you could call the resort directly or ask one of the condo owners in the BR area if this ticket is usually offered. HTH. Karen |
Whoa, Vail is quite a bit closer to Breckenridge--maybe half an hour on I70. Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail, and others are all right there.
You don't say when you are coming--that makes a big difference in the prices on accomodations and tickets. You can buy lift tickets at King Soopers at a discount on non-holiday times. You can probably stay on the outlying areas of Vail (not as far as Breck) and use the vail shuttle system. Vail is a great area, but you will find all the Colorado ski areas to be a great ski experience. |
I use to live at Copper Mt. which is halfway between Breck and Vail and it is about 20 minutes to each, so I'd plan on about a 40 min. trip. As always, in the mountains, the time will depend on traffic and especially driving conditions.
You can easily get to Vail from Breck. or you might try Copper Mt. It's a great ski area especially for families and cheaper than Vail. There are shuttle buses to Breck and Keystone from Copper. For areas just outside Vail, try either East Vail or West Vail, although I imagine they will still be a bit pricey. Another possibility is to stay in Frisco which is close to Breck but often offers more affordable housing. Shuttles stop in Frisco for Breck., Keystone and Copper. |
Vail Resorts include Vail, Breckenridge, Keystone, A-Basin, and Beaver Creek. You can ski all 5 on one ticket. Keystone is the only one that offers night skiing.
Since you want to spend as little money as possible, you might want to look at one of the towns outside of the resorts proper; Frisco, Silverthorne, Dillon are good choices. Avon is to the West of Vail and is also a choice but puts you furthest from the Summit County ski areas (all but Vail and Beaver Creek). Cheapest of all would probably be Dillon Valley. |
thanks for the info, we would like somewhere there is a shuttle. We probably won't have a car. We thought we would get a shuttle from Denver to Steamboat and then Steamboat to the next stop. We are coming on the 10th of Jan to Steamboat for 7 nights then to Vail until the 28th. We get 50% off Vail lift tickets because we have Queenstown season passes which is great. What would be the best place to stay that is affordable (around $200 a night) and handy to shuttles etc? Many thanks Kate

How many of you are there? the shuttles from the airport are not inexpensive and by the time you total up a couple of them you could have a car for a week.

Gretchen is right. I'm not even sure there is a shuttle you can get from Steamboat to Vail that you wouldn't have to charter privately. There are, however, shuttles and busses you can take once you get to Summit/Eagle Counties.

There are no shuttles from Steamboat Springs to Vail or the Summit Valley. There are shuttles at Vail and for the Summit Valley ski areas (Copper Mountain, Breckenridge, Keystone and A Basin). Without a car you'll have to take shuttle back to DEN from Steamboat Springs and then another out to Vail/Summmit Valley. Although with your schedule of 18 days in Colorado, it may not necessarily be cheaper to rent a car.
