Sketchbook Project
 

Mrs Adu and I joined The Sketchbook Project today. For $25 you are given a small book where you can write, draw, paste, embroider, or use any medium or combiantion of media you chose about any subject you choose. They have categories but they are as effective as a yellow light making you slow down.

You can even change the weight and color of the pages. The only requirement is that the final size is be 5 x 7. There is a storefront in Williamsburg Brooklyn where the books are kept. Submissions are not curated and they are sent all over the country as an exhibition. There is no financial reward.

Only wish I were at all artistic. I work with very talented art directors and graphic artists every day - and the way their minds work - how they solve problems and enviasge things - always amazes me.

The most I can do is (very rarely) interesting photos.

The quality of the books we saw were decidedly mixed. They are not judged but are supposed to be your expressions and intrepretations. Some were clever, artistic, and witty, others not.

While I am convinced not every one has talent, I am convinced that society values comfority and suppresses the urge to be different. When someone asks me if they are a writer, artist, musician, I ask them two questions:

When you get up in the morning, do you have the need to create?
And can you tell the world to go to hell?

If the answer to both is yes, they stand a chance.

"I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free."

Adu, some of my friends did this a few years ago. Very cool that you and Mrs. Adu are joining in!
