Skagway
Has anyone ever stayed at the Westmark Hotel in Skagway? Can you tell me what you thought of it? Thanks.

Yes, spend a couple nights there last year. It is a sprawling place spread out over more than a city block with various types of rooms, so you may or may not be disappointed. It is is no way fancy, but well kept. The rooms remind me more of a Holiday Inn in the 80's than a major hotel.
But after wandering the town for several days, I'd still choose it as the best bet in town. They also had the most polite and friendly group of college-aged staff I've ever encountered.

Thank you Patrick. I will keep my reservation there. I don't think there is actually a lot of hotels to pick from in Skagway anyway!! Thanks again and happy new year.

Its right in the middle of town and has a very nice restaurant/bar on the main street side. Yes it really is like an old Holiday Inn but then you won't find much, except there is a small hotel/bar called the Red Onion which is an actual ex-brothel a block away...lots more interesting.

I'll look into the Red Onion. Anyone else have any thoughts on places to stay in Skagway?

Years ago I stayed at the Skagway Inn on the main street. Here's my experience...having made my reservation early in the year (two rooms, four people for two nights) we arrived off the AMH ferry without a "greeter". Another "greeter" took us to the Inn, where they said they had no reservations! They were totally full, and so was every other place in town (they called for us). They said they could give us rooms the next night, but in the meantime they called a friend in the neighborhood who had a guestroom in the attic and that family took us in. We first were allowed to shower at the Inn and in the morning the Inn gave us breakfast. By the morning, our reservation had been located and the problem analysed. Seems over the winter when I'd called they had a person who stayed at the closed Inn and just took care of the place. That person had failed to relay my reservation to the owners. So, having had a good night's sleep (and no charge to us) we settled into the Inn and had a nice stay there as well. Had we been staying longer, the home owner had even offered to take my husband out salmon fishing! Good luck in Skagway. We had an adventure!

Ann, where were these people when I was in Shagway??!!!
I priced an up the river salmon boat trip in Wrangle to look at bears without any salmon fishing at all and it was $170 per person!!!!
We stayed at the Skagway Inn, another former brothel, in 2001. Comfortable, great location and very nice breakfast ... but the shared bath was a little out of date. Still, we would stay there again. If you are planning a trip on the train, try to get a reservation for earlier in the day. All we could get was last trip of the day and it got very foggy.
