Sixth Floor Museum: is it okay for kids?
Hi -- We're probably going to Dallas-Fort Worth area soon. I'm very much wanting to see the Sixth Floor Museum, but I'm not sure if it is appropriate for children (twins, age 6).

It is okay. They do a very good job of dealing with a difficult subject. Also, a new exhibit "Remembering Jack: Intimate and Unseen Photographs of the Kennedys". Also, Nellie Connally (last survivor from the car as she is widow of Gov. John Connally) has released a book. She had jotted down her thoughts on the event a few months afterward for her children as a part of history.

I'll beg to differ with Linda.
While the Sixth Floor Museum's material would not be disturbing to a child, the museum itself is really not appropriate for children that young. The exhibits and films are all geared towards adults or teens, not young children. The museum itself is very somber, and it is usually very quiet inside. The children will get nothing out of the museum, and will probably be quite bored.
Perhaps they could visit the Dallas World Aquarium (just down the street and GREAT for kids that age) and you could slip away to the Sixth Floor for a while? They will definitely LOVE the penguins, fish and alligators!

We took our two kids there a few years ago, they were about 9 and 5. They both got a little bored, but they asked questions and observed some history. The museum itself is awesome. You will love it. Here is my main concern. It might be hard for you to enjoy it if the kids are ready to go way before you have had a chance to see the whole museum. I am thinking that we were there for an hour and a half, or two hours? It is the kind of place that you must "experience". It sets a mood and a tone that in order to get the most out of it, you would rather not be distracted or forced to leave before you had the chance to really experience the whole exhibit.
If you can leave the kids with someone, I think just the adults would get more out of it without kids. If you have to take the kids, is there maybe a relative who wouldn't mind taking them outside to keep them company while you enjoyed the entire exhibit?
