Sites to see on Long Island

I am taking my daughter & her husband to Long Island in December. We will be going into NYC to see sites but I need something for them to do while I work on Tuesday, December 18th. Any suggestions on sites to see on Long Island? They will have a rental car.

Here are some ideas:

Mentioned on this website is Sagamore Hill (Teddy Roosevelt house) and Vanderbilt Museum and PLanetarium. These are not far from each other and in a lovely area of Long Island.

There are several historis sites, museums, wineries, scenic areas, etc.

Long Island is more than a 100 miles long & 12-24 miles deep, so it would be helpful to tell us WHERE on LI they will be staying.

While the places MFNYC mentions are lovely, your daughter and SIL might prefer exploring in Manhattan on their own to spending a day driving around Long Island. If I were them, I'd head into NYC and go to the Met Museum or do some shopping.

Long Island is - 110 miles. so it would help if you give us an idea of what area you will be in.

The places mentioned above are good ideas- but there are dozens of others - if you give us more info.

They will be staying in Hauppauge.

Not sure where you come from...but how about walking the beach in December. It will be cold, quiet and beautiful!
Jones Beach should be close enough to visit. Or if they want to drive, head out to the Hampton Beaches...or Montauk

In Westbury there's an excellent Air & Space museum with IMAX movies.

Old Bethpage Restoration has a lot of colonial houses/shops with activities of the area.

There are whaling Museums in Sag Harbor and Cold Spring Harbor.

And if you're interested in shopping Roosevelt Field is, I believe, the second largest Mall in the US.
