Sisters Weekend Get-away
 

I'm looking for ideas for a 2-3 night getaway. One sister in Washington, DC the other in southern New Hampshire. We like good food/wine, shopping, casinos, sightseeing. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced short trip? This would be the first time we've ever done something like this. Our lives are very hectic and we don't get much time together without families around. We are both late 50s.

Mrs Kal just got back from a looooong "Sisters Weekend" in Minna at Mall of America and really enjoyed it.
Food/booze and shopping. Casinos weren't their gig but I'm sure there's one nearby.

Minna is the hub of N'west, soooo.

You don't say what time of year, but New Orleans sounds like it fits most of your needs.

Of course, there's always Vegas. San Francisco would also work, but both are longer flights from the East Coast.

Congrats for taking time out for yourselves! I'm sure you'll have a great time whatever you choose!

I would recommend NYC or Boston - you can't go wrong with either of those!

Regarding my timeframe, I'm thinking it will probably be February or March due to the fact I'm busy most of October, and then we're into the holiday season.

I checked out some of the Indian Casinos, but noticed that most are alcohol free and we enjoy wine.

We are not wild about crazy crowds, so New Orleans might be fun, but not at the Mardi Gras timeframe.

I think Montreal has a casino -- any ideas for that area as to where to stay to enjoy that, some shopping, good food and drink? We do not speak French.

How about a cruise to Nova Scotia? They are very reasonbly priced off season and look like a lot of fun. Toronto is also a great long-weekend city to explore, if you're thinking Canada (the exchange rate helps the cost, too). My mom & sister & I try to do a "girls trip" at least once a year...you will love it!

Our girls weekends in the past have been to (in order of preference -- we're in our early 30s)
1. Montreal
2. New Orleans
3. Walt Disney World-no casinos though
4. L.A.
This year it's NYC...

Oops, I forgot to mention Vegas too..but that's an obvious choice.

Vegas us a good possibility, but me and my husband are going there the end of October, so don't know if I'd want to go again quite so quickly.

So is there a lot to see/do in Toronto? From what you've said it sounds like it might be interesting. They have a casino there too? What kind of itinerary might be good there?

Montreal that time of year would be beautiful. And the casino is huge and fun. We spent the whole day there. And you don't feel so bad gambling there because the US dollar is so strong in Canada. I would recommend using Priceline to get a hotel - we went the end of January last year and got Delta Montreal which we love, for $30/night. We went to the Angus for dinner and it was great.

Would you really want to do Montreal in February or March? It may be a little cold.

How about Charleston or San Antonio?

My sister and I have a getaway once a year. You will love it!!! We've done Denver twice, Kansas City, Dallas, and Chicago. We mainly shop with a bit of sightseeing. Mall of America would also be a good choice. Have a great time.

I grew up in VA and I didn't find the cold in Montreal that bad. And they have a HUGE underground mall which is usually VERY warm - they are good about heating there. And a little french wine never hurt either!

You sould try the fairly warm in the winter Palm Springs. It has lots of Indian Gaming Casinos and some are large resorts right in town. The airport is convenient to the town.

Our sisters weekend was in Palm Springs one year and we had a great time!!

That sounds interesting. Can you recommend a place to stay there that won't break the bank? Also, as it's an Indian Casino -- do they offer wine?

Montreal does sound interesting too -- especially as we can get more for our money there.

We don't want to spend a lot just getting to the place in air fare - want to spend our money on the nice place we stay and what we do when there.

Since I don't know what amount would break your bank, I'll post the web sites for the Casino and Spa but there are lots of places to stay in PS. I believe the casinos serve alcohal because they refer to bars and lounges.

Is there anything in the Phoenix area for February or March timeframe that anyone would suggest? That climate should be fairly mild then. Nice resort with interesting things to do?

I'll be visiting my sister tonight and we hope to go over all of our ideas and come up with something.

Airfare to Montreal shouldn't be too bad-from Chicago it's about 200. You may be there in time for their winter festival too which is supposed to be cool.
