Sightseeing Alone in San Francisco

My husband and I will be visiting San Francisco soon. He will be in meetings during the day, so I will sightsee during the day by myself. Any suggestions as to what I can go do and see alone? My concern is safety. I don't want to wander anywhere too isolated. Please give me your thoughts on what and what not to do alone.

I have been on my own in San Francisco while my husband was at conferences. I got a tourist transportation pass for the length of my stay that included the cable cars. I went on all the lines, and back and forth between downtown and Fisherman's Wharf, to China Town, Pier 39, out to the Golden Gate Bridge, to Golden Gate Park, etc. I never felt in danger in any way - there were always lots of people around. The cable car lines really made it fun and easy to plan my day, and you can't end up in a bad neighborhood on them. You'll need to take buses to some of the other places, but these always felt safe as well. Have fun...it's a great city!

If you enjoy walking on the beach, take the N-Judah to the end of the line and walk on the beach south to the Zoo (about 1.5 miles) where you can take the L Taraval back to the city. The Palace of the Legion of Honor has an excellent Art Deco exhibit that you might want to see. It also offers a fine view of the Golden Gate.

Your best bet would be a Grey Line city tour. It is a great way to see the sights and you could always take public transportation back to places of interest. They pick up at all hotels and motels. Enjoy !!

I like the idea of an organized tour the first day to get the lay of the land and then using public transportation to go back and see the sites and neighborhoods that interest you. The transit pass is great because you can get on and off wherever you like.

For safety, you wont have any problems during the day in any area of interest. If you happen to wander into a neighborhood that makes you uncomfortable, just turn around and go back the other way.

I vacationed alone in San Francisco and walked pretty much everywhere from my hotel in Union Square. Coit Tower, Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach, Chinatown. Took the cable cars as well. If it's during the day especially, you'll be fine.
