Side trips from San Fran
We're traveling to San Fran in early July, and are thinking of doing some side trips...interest in Muir Woods / Sausalito, and also South towards Monterey / Carmel (17 mile drive). What's the best (cost efficient, stress free) way to travel to these destinations. Rent a car, take a tour...etc.??
Thanks. |
I always enjoy a visit to Sam's Anchor Cafe in Tiburon. It's a great place to go for happy hour and dinner, or on the weekend for lunch.
Sit outside in the sun with incredible views of the Bay. Take the ferry so you don't have to worry about driving back to the city after a few (or more) drinks. www.samscafe.com 17 Mile Drive is also great -- just rent a car so you can detour or stop when you choose. |
Sausalito is on the same ferry as Tiburon that Gekko mentions. It's an easy trip and you can do both on the same day.
For the 17 mile drive you could take a tour bus, but I think renting a car gives you more flexibility. |
Perfect, thanks!

Just a quick clarification; the Blue and Gold Fleet, which leaves from Pier 41 (in Fisherman's Wharf) goes to both Tiburon and Sausalito). The Golden Gate Transit Ferry, which leaves from the Ferry Building, does not go to Tiburon. It does go to Sausalito and Larkspur. The latter are larger, more comfortable boats.

The easiest and fastest way to get to the Monterey Peninsula from San Francisco is to drive straight down 101 to 156 W to 1 S. Plan on at least 2 hours in non-commuter traffic.
