Side trips from Gettysburg, PA
Would like to do some touring after the Gettysburg Battlefield-what is nearby of interest -another town with some galleries, museums, shops-but not hershey or Lancaster. Is Pittsburgh a possibility? We are leaving on a Friday morning from NJ-287West & returning on MON. Thanks for any advice. Liz

I would want to go to Fallingwater - http://www.fallingwater.org/

If you want to see the largest painting of the Gettysburg battlefield go the the State Museum of Pennsylvania. http://www.statemuseumpa.org/
After you leave the museum, walk through the Capitol grounds and take the walkway over the street right into Strawberry Square mall. Take a good look at the 20+ foot tall clock with the rolling balls in Strawberry Square. |
You don't say how much time you'd have left, but three days to do G'burg AND Pgh is way too tight.
Much as we'd love for you to visit Pgh, when you have a few days to do at least parts of our city justice; you are heading home east to NJ, right? Might be better to aim for something closer in toward Philly, lots to see and do around there, and you'll be headed home when you need to leave. |
How about going south to Berkeley Springs, WV and then on to Harper's Ferry. Both interesting...Berkeley Springs has some nice shops, etc. and Harper's Ferry lots of history.

I think I remember Harper's Ferry only being an hour or two from Gettysburg and so worth the trip. You can walk the town, fill up on history, have lunch or dinner and continue on. It can be a good day trip from Gettysburg. www.nps.gov/hafe/

Just realized it is Harpers Ferry, not Harper's...sorry
