Hi Ed. Which airport will you be using? I have been pleased with the Airport Express bus to and from LaGuardia- $12 one way, or $20 round-trip.
If you visit the Port Authority's website, you can find information about your transportation options to/from each airport, with links:

If you're traveling alone and have a lot of time to waste, then a shuttle might make sense. Otherwise, take a cab or car service (particularly if you're flying into LGA). Carmel often has online coupons -- www.carmellimo.com

The shuttle I mentioned above doesn't necessary waste time, it all depends on where your hotel is. If you opt to be dropped off at a midtown hotel it could take awhile depending on how many stops etc. Last time I took the shuttle from JFK to Grand Central (I was staying only a few blocks away) it was under 45 minutes and my round trip fare was $27. Also I you are traveling with children, they ride for free (I think the age limit is 12??)

ed - thanks for posting this question.
Gekko - thanks for the tip about Carmel car service. I checked their website and you can print off coupons. We have always used a taxi into the city but the prices on the Carmel web site seem no more than a taxi perhaps even cheaper.
Gekko have you or anyone else used this or another car service? Is there ever a problem with making connections when they meet you at the airport?
Thanks.
Sandy

I always prefer to take a cab into the city from the airports for two reasons:
1 - Half the time the drivers are lost/confused or waiting at the wrong carousel - and you have to waste time seaching for them
2- Once you fnd them you have to trek out to the parking lots with your luggage (they can;t wait at the terminal for security reasons)
So for me it's easier to just hop a cab - even if you have to wait on line a few minutes. (And realize that car service means a sedan, usually in so/so condition - not a top-quality limo - those are distinctly more.)
IMHO for getting from the city to the airport a car service has distinct advantages - esp at rush hour or in the rain - so you don't have to drag your luggage around looking for a cab

I almost always use a car service when I leave the airport, usually Carmel or Tel Aviv. Several times a month, on average.
Make a reservation in advance, and then the moment you get your baggage, call. The car will arrive curbside in a few minutes (the dispatcher will ask what you're wearing or carrying so the driver can spot you, and usually the driver has a sign in the window with your name).
I've NEVER had a lost or confused driver -- they don't arrive until you call and they pick you up curbside, as I said.
I've NEVER had to "trek out to the parking lot." Curbside pick-up, generally within 5-10 minutes of calling (during rush times, I call before I have my luggage).
I've NEVER had a car that was in "so-so condition," although some are certainly nicer/newer than others (but you're 99% likely to get one nicer than any taxi, particularly the cabs with zero legroom -- I'm tall).
I have had to wait in long lines for a taxi, but that depends on the time of day and the season.
From the city to the airports? If LGA, I'm 50/50 on cabs/car service. With JFK/EWR, I'm 90% car service.

My daughter, husband and 2 little boys will be flying in with us on our next visit (eldest son's wedding) so seriously considering the car option. Another son will come in thru JFK.
On our last visit in May one of the cabs we used seemed to have zero leg room and I am not a tall person. So we are seriously considering the car option.
Thank you nytraveler and Gekko for your prompt response. Again thanks to ed for posting the initial question.

Well - I rarely have checked luggage - so calling when I get off the plane won;t work for me - I need the car there like 10 minutes after the plane lands - and if you wait and call then they usually need at least 30 minutes to get there. And the wait on the cab line is rarely more than 5 minutes - except for Newark late at night.
When I do have luggage I just tell them my flight so they can be waiting when it lands - and they are either late or confused/lost fairly often (sometimes even at the wrong terminal - and then it's three phone calls to get them organized.). I have even had drivers just standing by the carousel with no name sign - I suppose I should have guessed he was my driver - or perhaps I should have been carrying the sign?
As for so/so condition - they're usually the equivalent of a well-kept (not badly kept) cab. But I've had car service cars that are dirty, have no AC in the summer, couldn;t take luggage in the trunk and had to put the bag in with me - and several with odd odors. They are not in real limo condition.
IMHO - no benefit over a cab - and possible detriments - including wasted time and hauling luggage around.
