Shrimp and Grits in Savannah
My husband and I are going to Savannah for the first time from 5/16-18. I figure going to the South, I need to try shrimp and grits. Reading web reviews, I see that Uncle Bubba's got good reviews. I also see that Vic's on the River does them. Any suggestions on the best shrimp and grits? We're staying at the Hamilton Turner Inn.

At the Olde Pink House I enjoyed an appetizer of shrimp, country ham and grits. Don't know if that's what you had in mind, but it's pretty good!

I saw your post and had to reply. We love shrimp and grits. Here is a recipe I tried and is excellent. The ingredients are simple and it's easy to make. You might enjoy making it and then trying it on vacation. Just don't overcook your shrimp :) Here it is: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/reci..._23030,00.html

The appetizer at the Pink House is one of the best I've ever had.
I like it so much that I often have two appetizers (always including the shrimp and grits) served as my entree. |

Here's a glimpse at their menu The crispy scored flounder is their signature dish. Wonderful. Their signature dessert is a praline basket with ice cream and toppings. I tell the waiter to hold one or two for the table as soon as we are seated - because they often run out. The she crab soup is fabulous! If you can't get a reservations, have a drink and an appetizer or dessert in the historic tavern downstairs - and listen to Gail Thurmond play the piano if you are lucky! |
I have always wanted to have me a big ol'plate of shrimp and grits but no one seems to serve it out in San Diego..guess I have to go to the Pink House which I think I saw on the Travel Channel and what a lovely property..I want to go and stay there!

Starrs --
I had that crispy scored flounder the same night. What an amazing dish, with that sweet and salty apricot glaze. Guess I'll have to go back for the she-crab soup. |
I've never had shrimp and grits, but Uncle Bubba's (was there over Christmas)has the best seafood gumbo I've ever had.

The shrimp and grits at the Pink House is different than what I've had elsewhere. First, it's a grits cake - firmer, shaped, not soft grits on a plate. I've had both and I like both but I LOVE the way the Pink House serves it. And, since it's an appetizer portion, I don't feel as guilty :-). Of course, I make up for it with the sinful she crab soup.
FD, I've entertained large groups at the PH for years and NO ONE has ever been served a bad meal. It took a few years for me to divert from the 2 appetizers = entree meal to try the scored flounder but listened to people rave every time. It truly is delicious. I don't think I've ever gone to Savannah without eating at the PH at some time - even if it is just an appetizer or dessert at the Tavern. They always so things "right" (including special events). |
We ate at Uncle Bubbas within lastyear and had great shrimp. Not a grits fan so can't help you there.

Uncle Bubba is brother to Paula of The Lady and Sons. I am sure she owns part of it.

I enjoyed the shrimp and grits at Belford's, but that was over 2 years ago now... gosh, now I want to go back.
