Should I book now or wait for S. Florida hotels over Xmas?

My wife, myself and 1 year old baby Oscar are flying to Atlanta renting a car then driving down to South Florida from the 23rd thru the 29th. We have a room booked at the St. Regis, Atlanta on the 28th and that is our only hotel room booked so far. I would like to stay at either SPG, 5 Star or LHW hotels but want serious deals on the rooms. Do unsold rooms over holidays go on sale and if so how do I find the best deal on them? We really have no itinerary except on the 28th in Atlanta as we fly hom on the afternoon of the 29th.

Book something you're happy with asap.
If it's cancelable then keep an eye out for last minute deals but to my knowledge these are few and far between at Christmas.
I've found it best to book way in advance (at least 6 months) for the lowest hotel prices over the holiday period and through out peak season.

"unsold rooms over holidays", especially the Christmas Holiday, do not exist in South Florida! You may find something but why put your family through all of that hassle & uncertainty?

You may want to take a look at www.redweek.com
and www.tug2.com
These are timeshare rental sites.
You may be able to get something in your price range from a desperate Timeshare owner who has not been successful in renting his/her Christmas week. You may even get a nice 1Bedroom Villa!
But... do it now.....not on Dec 23!!!

Um, this is high season and super busy in FL. You may be too late now to get rooms - no matter the price. Getting deep discounts is a fantasy at this time of year.

The week between Christmas and New Years is the busiest time of year in south Florida.

I just would have thought being in a recession that there would be more rooms available this year than most years. I guess I guessed wrong. I had a room booked a the W. in Fort Lauderdale but cancelled due to the craziness that would be the W over Christmas with a 1 year old.

My next thought was trying to find someone on VRBO that would be desperate to rent their beachfront house/condo for a week for something like 40% off rates to get it rented. I appreciate info from you all. Should have realized that about S. Florida though.

Ackislander, Nope! Perhaps a little naive but I think this is genuine (I looked at previous posts under a similar name).

aspenedelen, even in this recession I've read that hotel bookings are up and expected to rise in 2012. I can't remember where I read this so googled and came up with this report from Sept 2011 about Atlanta hotels.

http://travel.usatoday.com/hotels/po...-boom/546191/1

Good luck with your vacation plans.

I think that US hotel boooings may be holding steady since in a bad economy people are staying in the US versus more expensive foreign travel.

I wouldn't delay in hopes there will be a last-minute bargain.

There are a lot of really crummy places in bad areas that you might end up in, waiting for some great last-minute bargain that doesn't appear. Don't risk putting your wife and baby through a very dismal Christmas holiday because of your cheapness.

I read that hotel bookings worldwide are slowly increasing and predicted to increase in 2012.

We book a room that we can cancel shortly before arrival and use it as back-up insurance while we shop for better deals.

Relevant data? You decide.

Our Christmaas Stroll here in Nantucket last weekend had record numbers of visitors after several down years. Many of them came Thursday and stayed until Monday rather than Friday-Sunday.

Hilarious. AND with a one year old child in tow. He must be a trip to live with--on the edge--it'll work out, honey.
"Recession". Maybe reading/listening to too many Republican sites also. Yes, we are in economic problems. You don't seem to have them, and more power to you, but don't expect a deal when it THE time of year that some make their profit.

aspenedelen, South Florida gets so many visitors from overseas that the recession hasn't hit there in quite the same way that it may have in other areas.

Well, I decided to take everyone's advice and booked the 23rd at the Ritz Carlton at Amelia Island and the 24th, 25th and 26th at the Ritz Carlton in Palm Beach. I booked both hotels through amex and got 25% percent for being a cardholder which is kind of a nice perk. The 27th we spend in Barefoot Beach then off to Atlanta for our last night on the 28th. Thanks for everyone's input with this. Being I don't get to Florida very often had no idea that they are bucking the curve.

Sassy, thanks for posting the link for that article in regards with Atlanta hotels. After I read it I went to the St. Regis website and ended up booking a suite for 30% off rack rates. It will be a great way to end this vacation back home to snowy S.Dakota.

Well, bless your heart. You came out SO well with all your discounts. Things must be good in S.Dak. too.
