Short weekend roadtrips from the South Maryland area?
I recently moved in with my girlfriend to South Maryland, about 10 minutes from the DC border. Her birthday is coming up in June and I want to take her away for the weekend (leaving Friday evening and returning home on Sunday). I don't know the area all that well (I'm from NYC, she's a native Marylander).
Any recommendations on a destination that would take less than three hours to drive to, where I could rent a cottage/cabin for us? Looking for a romantic getaway, someplace cozy with maybe a lake nearby where we can swim or maybe go boating. We are a lesbian couple, if that makes any difference.
Thank you! I have posted this on the DC forum as well.

What about heading to the mountains? Maybe Charlottesville, VA?
Here's one idea with great reviews -

I second the idea of Deep Creek Lake. Call one of the real estate businesses in McHenry, MD and they'll help you find a rental.
You could also take a look at VRBO.com for a place in the Virginia mountains or Western Maryland.
A third option would be renting a cabin through the state park systems. Try Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, and even Pennsylvania. It might be little late to get someplace in June, but it's worth a try. If you can't get a cabin, lot's of the parks have lodges also.
If you can go in the beginning of June, you'll probably have more luck finding a weekend rental. Once school is out, most places will only do weekly rentals.
Good luck.

Check out this VRBO in particular: http://www.vrbo.com/39253. My husband and I stayed there, and it is very nice. It is south of Berkeley Springs, but you could drive in for dinner (about 20 minutes or so). It is also not far from Cacapon State Park for good hiking.

There are lots of great possibilities in the area.
You could drive the Skyline Drive or Blueridge Parkway. Enjoy the Virginia parks.
Wintergreen - resort with a lake in the mountains. Close to Charlottesville if you are interested in history. Close to wineries if you like that sort of thing.
West Virginia--Blackwater Falls - Swim, bike, rent a cabin.
MAryland or Delaware Shore (Rehobeth beach, Bethany Beach, etc.)- Beach!

Solomons Island MD is a really cool little place. It's at the confluence of the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay.

Depending on where you're located in MD, it's an easy drive down MD 4.
Here are some B&B websites.

If you're more into hotels, the new Hilton Garden Inn is fantastic.
