I am planning a short two day visit to the Plymouth area in a few weeks, with my wife and two kids (ages 12 and 14).

Can you help with any tips on restaurants in the area, inexpensive hotels or motels, special sights, etc...

Thanks in advance for any thoughts you can share...

When we were there two years ago, we stayed at the Pilgrim Sands about three miles south of Plymouth. While it's nothing at all fancy, it wasn't inexpensive. In fact, it was a fair bit more than we'd originally wanted to spend. But we wound up feeling it was worth every penny. It has a small private beach, an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. There's a great deck that looks out over Plymouth Bay. We spent many relaxing evening hours there during our five day stay. It was a really good place to stay with kids (ours were 13 and 17 at the time).

Just across the street from Pilgrim Sands is what, to my mind, is the absolute must not miss site in the area, particularly for a family--Plimoth Plantation. It's just incredibly well done. Their website is plimothplantation.com

Two of the nights we were there, we ordered pizza, salad and, I think, sandwiches from a place whose delivery menu was in the room. Very good! And saving a little on dinner helped to offset the more expensive room.

We had lunch one day at a lobster shack whose name escapes me at the moment. But I've seen it mentioned often and it's right down on the waterfront in Plymouth. We enjoyed it.

I agree, Plimoth Plantation is well worth the time and expense. Get a combination ticket and also visit the Mayflower II if she's in port, it will help to make the Pilgrims' experiences even more real. Don't bother with Plymouth Rock, it's a joke.

I'm shocked! Go to Plymouth and not visit the rock?

Actually, I'm teasing I agree, we love Plymouth but I do agree the Rock isn't interesting but if you're only in town for a short visit, it's a 2 minute walk from the Mayflower, why wouldn't you just take the time to look?

And then you can go home and say "well we saw it it wasn't that interesting"
