Short Trip to San Francisco
 

Am considering a short jaunt to San Fran. Need suggestions for hotels (best location), restaurants, things to see.

Thanks - what I'm looking for is what is the best location to stay. I've had a broken ankle so don't know how much walking I'll be up to so want the best location which is convenient to the sites. Do you suggest near Fisherman's Wharf, the North Beach, Nob Hill?

Here is where I would stay, based upon the following criteria:<BR><BR>Union Square - if I wanted to shop until I dropped.<BR><BR>Union Street (Cow Hollow) - if I wanted to mix cafes in with my shopping and I wanted to shop at boutiques and unique shops.<BR><BR>Fisherman's Wharf - if I wanted to be with large groups of tourists, especially families and near the key tourist attraction.<BR><BR>North Beach - if I wanted a more Bohemian experience.<BR><BR>Ocean Beach - if I wanted a cold, chilly beach experience.<BR><BR>Tiburon or Sausalito - if I wanted to see the city lights at night as I lay my head I my pillow.<BR><BR>Berkeley/Oakland - if I wanted a University experience (or spa experience at the Claremont, very nice http://www.claremontresort.com/)<BR><BR>I am sure there are other areas. Maybe others will help.

If you have a broken ankle, I would suggest you avoid Nob Hill like the plague. It's close to Union Square and the hotels are magnificent, but it's also *straight up* from Union Square and that's not a hill you want to walk up often even if you're in peak condition.<BR>You would probably be in good shape if you picked someplace like the Hyatt Regency San Francisco, which is located on Market and Embarcadero. It's pricey, so you might want to look for something in the area a bit cheaper, but it's right by a BART station, lots of bus stops, as well as near the F-Line of streetcars that will get you from Fisherman's Wharf to the Castro via The Embarcadero, and Market Street.Other than that suggestion, follow sharon's post just above this one :) She's right on the money.
