short trip through asheville

On my way east to visit my daughter in Charlotte, I thought I might stop in Asheville and spend the night. I would have a few hours the first day and the next to explore. Is that going to be enough time to really see anything? I would appreciate any suggestions for things to do in such a short time.

Following this thread - - - We will possibly be driving through Asheville in September(depending on whether the NC governor decides to join the 21st century).

Asheville is a great place to eat, drink, go to galleries, listen to music and just enjoy the city and its neighborhoods. Easily can spend an afternoon hanging out at the many cafes and breweries in downtown, or the River Arts District, or West Asheville. Pick a downtown hotel and hit the streets. And scdreamer, Asheville is not the North Carolina represented by our idiot Governor and the bigoted Republican Legislature.

Yes, you can have a nice taste of Asheville.
AND there are a lot of people in NC that wish we weren't being made a laughingstock by our backward REPUBLICAN legislature and governor.

I've always found North Carolinians very smart & informed, nothing like the image being propogated by the governor. The state has excellent liberal arts colleges and Research Triangle Park is the Silicon Valley of the South.

lsessions thanks for the links. I'm afraid I have to stick to the downtown maybe with a stop in the River Arts District due to time.
