Short term rentals in NOLA? Legal or not?
 

Friends want to visit NOLA next April. They're a large group and they've talked about renting a house for the week but want to make sure they're not breaking any local housing laws. Are short term rentals illegal in the F.Q. or everywhere in NOLA? Thanks in advance for any information you can share. ~ Bow

I stayed at this place (pre Katrina) It seems that they do have some private rooms in addition to the dorms.

I like the Garden District better than the FQ.
Ride the St. Charles streetcar to get to Canal St. and the FQ.

Unless I'm mistaken there are no private rooms/apartments/unlicensed B&Bs with legitimate short term rentals in the FQ.

I know of at least one timeshare in the French Quarter that's really nice: it's the Quarter House. quarterhouse.com We stayed there several years ago and they have lots of units of varying sizes and shapes.

I think there's at least one more timeshare in that area, but am not sure of the name or location.

For specifics about legal short-term rentals, if you don't get an answer here, you might try tripadvisor.com. I think they have several people who own B&Bs who could give you more information.

I've recently seen a website that had a fabulous apartment in the FQ on the river but for the life of me I can't remember how to look it up. I think it was a former warehouse that would accommodate 8 or 10, but that's about all I know. Good luck!

The French Quarter really isn't residential - so finding a free-standing private house to rent there isn't very likely. Not sure why they want this type of property versus B&B or hotels - [rice issue - or they wantthe privacy. But I think there are a lot more larger properties for rent in other areas of the city.

They don't want a free standing private house necessarily; apartments that are near each other might do too. We'll see; if nothing comes up they'll book a block of rooms at a hotel.

I looked at the legal short term rentals in Vieux Carre (FQ) Littleman was kind enough to post, but it looks to me like they're all hotels or licensed B&Bs.

I don't think apt. rentals for less than 60 days are legal in New Orleans. Anyway, the group is now looking at a hotel stay and reserving a block of rooms.

I'm not sure about legal issues, but this place is amazing and has an awesome location right across from Jackson Square in the French Quarter. I haven't stayed there, but my brother has several times.

Other than NYC's recent change, what reason do we have to think that NOLA does not allow short-term rentals? I've not heard anything to indicate they have followed NYC's lead.

I would rent something from VRBO without any concern.

Actually, this has been longstanding in NOLA except for a few properties and those are the properties I would be interested in. The group has set aside a block of rooms at the Monteleone.
