I was also confused by Sue's statement about an "8 dollar pass" until I realized she did not mean a Fun Pass but a pay-as-you-go MetroCard. Then I did the math.
When you put $8 or more on a MetroCard, you receive a 15% bonus.
So $8 gets you a bonus of $1.20, for a total of $9.20 on the card which will cover the 4 rides needed by the OP.
(4 trips x $2.25 [single fare] = $9.00)
By the way, the one-day unlimited-ride Fun Pass (used by only one person) costs $8.25.

Since they are only doing 1 think and may not use all rides, they can hold on to the card for their next trip and add money to it then or give the card to a friend going to the city.
The day passes are good from the time you start them til 3AM the following day and can only be used by 1 person.

The best streets to walk to get the feel of the theater district are 44th and 45th between Times Square and Eighth Avenue. Halfway down either block is Shubert Alley, which runs between the two streets.
