shopping w/teen

I'd like to take my 15 yr old daughter shopping in the village/soho area but I'm a bit confused. She's not punk but we can't afford Gucci either! Where are the fun shops we can auctually buy in; Lower east side, village, east village, soho? Also, can we walk all around in half a day (say 12-5) Thanks!

For clothing, I'd say H & M-a chain store from Europe with up to the minute fashions at great prices. They have several locations, mostly midtown I think. Canal St. (downtown, Chinatown)is good for accessories-- has lots of knock off handbags, hair accessories etc. Pearl River Market (downtown)is another favorite. Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie (both in Soho)are fun too. There are smaller boutiques almost everywhere. You can't really cover it all. Decisions, decisions.

Here's another thread on the same subject.

H&M has branches in 11 states and Washington DC, mostly in the Northeast, but as far west as Illinois.

Hi Css and mclaurie. I took my almost 12 yr old daughter shopping in NY last weekend. On Sat., combined w/other things in the Village (an outdoor art festival, etc.) we tried Betwixt, which was suggested as a new popular place in the village for girls this age. It is a fairly small shop. They have cute stuff, but your daughter needs to be on the small side to fit there. My daughter is on a swim team and is short, but broad in the shoulders and normal sized elsewhere, and the clothes didn't fit her there. On Sun. we went to Century 21, also recommended on here. It is a big discount dept store, was very crowded on Sunday, and they had no dressing rooms for kids/teens, only for adults, which was a bummer. But they did have alot of very nice cute juniors sized clothes at good prices- we bought some and prayed they would fit, and they did, thank goodness. But take your patience w/you if you go there. We LOVED Pearl River Mart! You can get there and to Century 21 by subway easily (we did both of those on Sunday, then went to Little Italy for dinner, although we could have just stayed in Soho for dinner also). At Pearl River Mart my daughter got some shoes, cute flip flops, purses, accessories, and I got some flax/linen and silk pieces there (a bonus, I didn't plan to shop for myself). It is a fun store w/very affordable prices. We ended up buying some clothes for her at the Old Navy down the block from Pearl River in Soho- I know, we have Old Navy here too, but she enjoyed going into that one in NY anyway. Wish we had known about Anthropologie- I will add that to the list for Oct. when we go back, mclaurie! We also enjoyed shopping at the street fairs- my daugher got a jean jacket w/appliques on it, a hat, purses, sunglasses, etc. at a strret fair in the Village.
Please let us know if yo ufind other places that are good! We are going back in Oct. and would appreciate it.

emd, Anthropologie is a catalogue too. Have a look at anthropologie.com It might be priced more for you than for your daughter.

Another place I forget to mention for shopping is Asia Society gift shop (Park Avenue at 70th st.) It may be similar to Pearl River (I've never been). It has clothes, gifts, books, music, stuff for the house. Have a look here

A 15 year old may appreciate shopping where the college kids shop. Go to the area right around NY University by Washington Square Park for vintage/hip clothes on a college student's budget. Don't quite remember the streets but try Broadway, Third Avenue, and Canal from there. Half a day? Depends on how much your daughter likes to shop!

Daffy's (a discount store) had various locations in the area. Also the various flea markets (B'way near W. 4th), SPring St and W. B'way. There also seems to be a street fair somewhere in the area all summer long where you may find some unique items.

My 15 yr old (we lioe in the village) likes the typical chains (Express, American Eagle Outfitter, Urban Outfitter) and the discounts stores (century 21, Loehman's and Daffy's). She likes the clothes in Betwixt but I don't like the prices so we never shop there. She's not crazy about H&M. She also likes lots of the little stores along Broadway in the village area (Wet Seal, Basic Basic, French Connection, etc.). Yesterday we went to Pearl River, she loved it.
